Down / Re: Comber - Thompson families
« on: Tuesday 08 August 23 23:07 BST (UK)  »
I have just come across this chat and am interested because I am researching a DNA match I have with a descendent from Hugh & Agnes / Ann.  I would be interested to know if anyone has been able to take this any further especially with the new information continually becoming available.

It is a bit of a clutching at straws scenario but I have a brickwall where my great grandmother, Victoria Thompson, recorded upon her marriage that her father was John Thompson, a master mariner, and census records state that she was born "across the Red Sea" - family stories say that her father died at sea and the family where stranded there.  I have no accurate dates but estimate that Victoria was born between 1854 and 1860 with 1859 being the most likely and that her father John died before 1876 when she married (possibly some years before that date) and I guesstimate his birth as being around 1820.  Victoria married in Bishop Middleham, Co Durham and died at Shotton Colliery, Co Durham.

As already stated a very long shot but could there be a connection here?
Many thanks in advance for any comments - negative or positive.

Hi
Would be interesting to compare notes on this as I believe that the Ralph Wood (died 1752 / 53) is my 6 x gt grandfather

Many thanks for everyone's input.

Unfortunately I have not been able to find any birth / baptism records for the known child let alone one I was not aware of.  The detail of the known child is from an 1821 census which was recorded in the parish records but with no given age.

If this is regarding a yet unborn child would there have been a further record after the birth or would this one have been enough - there is not any detail of any type of examination.

I believe in this instance that the child had already been born the previous year unless of course there was another child on the way after a very short space of time.  Could it relate to whether the man being questioned is the father or not?

I have found the phrase "is not brought to Bed" on several quarter session papers relating to investigations into the parentage of illegitemate children.  Can anyone give me a clue as to its meaning please?

Thanks

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Re: Anyone know where Rockcliff or Rockliffe is?

This may be a bit late for your research but I have a copy of a marriage record for one of my ancestors which clearly states Rock Cliff as the residence at time of marriage.  This marriage was in the parish of Easington in the county of York.  This parish covers the coastal area just north of Whitby and I think as far inland as Guisborough so this fits in with an earlier reply giving this area as a location.

Anniee63 - this record of mine is for the marriage of John William Thurlow to Isabella Severs - daughter of Christopher Severs.
