Thanks for this - since my original post I've traced the Maitlands through the census and parish records and posted an update message on 24 March this year.

Thank you both for your replies.

Portsmouth Library were extremely helpful and confirmed the location as approximately between Fitzroy Walk and King Albert Street off Fratton Road.

If anyone else is interested, it was built sometime between 1851-1861 and demolished between 1969 and 1971 as part of a large re-development west of Fratton Road.

England / Mystery Dowdings
« on: Friday 24 March 06 21:17 GMT (UK)  »
I've been trying to trace back my Dowding ancestors, so far to Matthias Dowding b 1788, possibly in Cucklington, Somerset close to the Dorset border. There are lots of other Dowdings in that area, including at least 2 other Matthias', but I've been unable to link them into my tree so far.

The reason that I have posted this on the Dorset board is that in tracking all the Dowdings listed in census returns 1841 - 1901 who claimed to have been born in Cucklington I have found an interesting group of 5 men who claim to have been born there but for whom there is no entry in the Parish records, which I checked through myself, together with neighbouring parishes at Christmas: James (c 1780), John (c 1788), Matthias (c 1788), William (c 1791) and Isaac (c1793).

By 1841 all 5 were living in Dorset - James and William in Bagber; Matthias in Fiddleford; John in Gillingham and Isaac in Wareham. I have also found a record for the death of a Henry Dowding who was buried in Bagber on 1 February 1833, aged 67 so born c 1766. It is tempting to suppose that they were related, though I know that is a dangerous habit for a genealogist !!

Does anyone recognise any of these men ?

Thanks

Dorset / Maitland, around Blandford Forum
« on: Friday 24 March 06 20:52 GMT (UK)  »
I've made a couple of posts before re. this family, and have made quite a lot of progress since then. However, I now seem to have hit the dreaded brick wall !

The earliest ancestor I have is James Maitland who was married to Letitia Baker in Blandford Forum in 1792. There is no trace of his birth in the town, although according to his burial record (1823 unfortunately so no census records, no will) he was born about 1769.

All the Maitlands listed in the census for Dorset 1841 - 1861 are directly related to this man through his 9 children: Charles, Elizabeth, Jonathon, James, Ann, William, Charlotte, Andrew and David.  After 1861 they scattered to Poole, Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight.

There is a record of a Thomas Peter Maitland being baptised in Durweston (2 miles north of Blandford) in 1772. His father was John or, more likely, Jonathon Maitland; the mother is listed simply as “and his wife“.Other Durweston records for this period are unfortunately largely illegible. This is tempting as James named his second son Jonathon.

I have also found a record of a Jane Maitland baptised in Bryanstone (just to the east of Blandford) on 27 March 1776 whose parents were listed as Thomas and Elizabeth Maitland.

Does anyone recognise these names, or have any suggestions as to where I could go from here ?

Thanks

Hampshire & IOW Completed Lookup Requests / Harley Street, Portsea
« on: Friday 24 March 06 20:25 GMT (UK)  »
I have found my father's grandfather, and two of his great uncles, all living at different addresses in Harley Street, Portsea in the 1871 - 1901 census.

The street was in St Mary's parish in the St Pauls Municipal Ward, but does not seem to exist any more - I guess that it was probably bombed during the war as St Mary's parish was close to the dockyard.

Can anyone help me find out more about Harley Street ? I'd like to know where it was, when it was built and what happened to it if possible.

Dorset / Re: New Buildings, Blandford Forum
« on: Saturday 17 September 05 19:20 BST (UK)  »
Postscript :

On my visit to Blandford Museum in Sept 2005 I discovered that "New Buildings" was the general name given to  development east of Damory Road as Blandford Forum expanded rapidly in the early Victorian era.

The name seems to disappear from Trade Directories from shortly after that time which suggest it was indeed a temporary name.

A few 19th century cottages survive, but much of the area has clearly been redeveloped recently. There is also a possibility that buildings were demolished in the 1860s as the railway came through - the 1901 map seems to show a cutting close to the junction of Damory Road and East Street.

Suffolk / St Audrey's Hospital, Woodbridge
« on: Saturday 30 July 05 23:32 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have any info. about ST Audrey's, Woodbridge which was a large Mental hospital ? My grandmother and at least one of her sisters were nurses there in the early 1920s. I've found info about the new flats it is being turned into but nothing so far that would tell me what it was like to work there.
