Hi Cody, I think you and I have corresponded about the Angels before!

Thank you for the extra information about Great Torrington Church, and the returns.  I can get a little bit further back now!

Good to meet you, cousin!  That's a fascinating pedigree you have there.  I'm sad to see we were on the wrong side in the Wars of the Roses!

We seem to differ a bit in the ancestral line.  I have Ann Angel's parents as James 1730 and Margaret Fanson.  Then Henry Angel 1689-1774 and Elizabeth Hawkins; Maurice Angel 1665-1748 and Mary Chapell (we agree there); James Angel 1643-1721 and Mary Lang; lastly Maurice Angel d1670 and wife Margaret.  I haven't been able to get beyond that point, though it's a while since I tried so new sources may be available.

Happy to go to email if you'd like to discuss this further.

All the best, Maureen

Do you mean John Angel Fewings b 13 Jan 1857 in Ashprington, son of William Angel Fewings and Charlotte Gorden?  If so, he is my 1st cousin 4x removed.

His grandmother was Ann Stanbury, bap 1794 in Hatherleigh and her mother was indeed Ann Angel.

I'd be interested to see your connections.  I've only got the Angel line back as far as Maurice Angel, who died in Hatherleigh in 1670.

FindMyPast has the baptism of Hugh Brent son of Hugh Brent of Shebbear and wife Elizabeth in Black Torrington 3 Apr 1803.

They also have the marriage of Hugh Brent of Shebbear and Elizabeth Pettle in Monkleigh 13 Apr 1803! (The marriage is indexed; the image can be found by searching the parish register on FindMyPast).

So there is a discrepancy in dates, and the mention of a second Hugh Brent to complicate matters.  Perhaps you need to go further back to establish the cousin relationship and clarify the possible parentage.

I have an Elizabeth Furneaux, daughter of Samuel Furneaux and Elizabeth Honniwell, who was baptised in Buckfastleigh 23 Dec 1695.  However, I have her married to Philip Michelmore 31 Mar 1719 in Buckfastleigh.  I may be wrong, and there are a few Elizabeth F*s to choose from!

FinMyPast has early Plymouth parish registers but you may want to look further afield.  I have a Marine (just a bit later than this) born in Plymouth and joined the Marines there, married in Chatham in 1830, and has children born in Chatham, Woolwich, Canada and Barbados.  You may find this link helpful

FindMyPast also has the GRO Regimental Birth Indices Supplement (1761 to 1924)

It's hundreds of miles from Plymouth to London - especially on the roads in 1763!
Not a journey you would be undertaking lightly.

It would be far more likely that they would travel by sea, especially from a place like Plymouth with almost as many boats/ships as people!

Have you considered that Sarah may also have been widowed?  You suggest she may have been born as early as 1755, and it would be unusual for a woman of 34 to be making a first marriage.  So you really could be looking for a needle in a haystack, a Sarah who married a Mortimore and was subsequently widowed, almost anywhere in the country.  Devon and London would seem to be the first places to look.

AAAAGGGHH! These Stanburys!  You're more than likely right about the other couple.  I hadn't really come across them, and knowing the Plymouth connection and the records saying 'Bickleigh, Plymouth' I jumped on them.  Yes, I think the parents did follow the children to Plymouth.  Why are they so hard to find?!

Still no clue as to the identity of Peter Stanbury, I had another try yesterday.  I believe Peter died 1816 in Bickleigh, Plymouth, aged 56 which would mean he was more or less the same age as Ann.  "Ann Stanbury wife of Peter Stanbury" was buried in Bickleigh in 1804.
