The Common Room / Re: Ancestry 'World Tree' prefix and contacts.
« on: Tuesday 06 June 06 07:57 BST (UK)  »
You can find most of the trees submitted to Ancestry for free on RootsWeb.  If the submitter clicked on the "One World Tree" option then you can find the information on RootsWeb (which is sponsored by Ancestry).
It is easier to search RootsWeb and you can produce several different reports from the trees.

Technical Help / Re: Computer help needed please

AVG, ZoneAlarm and Spybot do entirely separate functions.

ZoneAlarm is a personal firewall - it is not an anti-virus or an anti-spyware tool (the professional version does include an anti-spyware add on but you need to pay for this version).

Computer viruses are entirely different animals to computer spyware and require different tools.  You need to have an anti-viris, a firewall and anti-spyware software.

Without all 3 you are at serious risk on the internet!

Hi Lady Di,

I see that you are in OZ. You are probably connecting via the Southern Cross Cable that links Oz to the USA and then the World.

There has been  a major fault on the cable at the US end that was causing problems with viewing some sites, depending on what ISP you use in OZ.

The fault may be fixed now as I am having no difficulties.

Don't forget to regularly update Spybot if you use it.  You have to do it manually, I usually "check for updates" weekly.

Occupation Interests / Re: What's a Fur Puller?
« on: Monday 15 May 06 02:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi bluewhoopi,

I have several Fellmongers or Fur Pullers in my tree from around Nuneaton in the latter part part of the 19th century, must have been a really smelly job.

I also noticed that you list the surname Teather in your interests.  I have several hundred Tether/Teathers in my tree, originally from Notts but then Lincs, Yorkshire and the US.

Click on my web site link and see if we have any links.

Bedfordshire / Re: Barzillai Denton
« on: Monday 15 May 06 01:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi Bob,

My Barzillai was definately male.

Barzillai Deacon b 1839 Fleckney, Leics  and his sister Barzillia Deacon born 1842 Fleckney.  They also had a brother Job and a sister Hannah.  Their Uncle Abraham founded the "Strict and Peculiar Carmel Chapel" in Fleckney.

There are several other related Barzillai Deacon males around the latter half of the 19th century.

Hi Bethan,

I assume that you are refering to Barzillai as the unusual name.  Barzillai is actually a Biblical name from the story of David.  I have both a Barzillai and a Barzillia (the female version) from around the same era in my tree.

It may indicate  that the family were non-conformists, probably Baptists.

Hi Coral,

A James Bown, born Desford 1830, married my 2x cousin 4x removed Hannah Grudgings, in Desford in 1858.  They had 5 children, all born Desford.  James died in 1890, with the death registered in Ashby de la Zouch.

Any links?

Completed Census Requests / Re: ancestry.co.uk
« on: Monday 08 May 06 08:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am now well into my 2nd year on Ancestry.  I find it an invaluable source of information, even more so now with the GRO indexes from 1837 to 2002. It is particularly valuable for us Colonials who can't get to a Records Office.

Below is a brief list of what is available in the UK Deluxe membership, if you have US ancestors there is a lot more available (for an additional fee).

UK CENSUS RECORDS
1901 England   1901 Wales
1891 England   1891 Wales
1881 England   1881 Wales
1871 England   1871 Wales
1861 England   1861 Wales
1851 England   1851 Wales
1841 England*   1841 Wales*

MORE COLLECTIONS
UK & Ireland Parish and Probate Records
England & Wales, BMD Index
Pallot Marriage Index
Irish Immigrants: New York Port Arrival

The transcriptions and indexes are sometimes a bit screwy, but that is not surprising considering the huge amount of information and the sometimes very dubious handwriting on the original records.

Highly recommended!

Paul
