Peeblesshire / Re: Mystery McDakins!

  Hello Monica,
Thank you for  looking into my McDakins. I think your suggestion that the name underwent a radical change is correct. The McDakins on family search & 1851 census are the same family. Ideas on getting back to the origin of the surname would be welcome.

  Best Wishes

Thanks for prompt reply. I was in contact with Ivan a couple of years ago and he was extremely helpful.
The museum at Soham has a copy of the 2nd volume of the Steadmans by M R Allen, which carrys on the family lines from the first book. But, as the museum had no premises I only managed to have a quick read.
I have found Sohamroots a very interesting site.
My interest in Steadman started because I married into the family.

I would be grateful for help regarding this family.
My brickwall is Samuel Gordon McDakin/MacDakin b. abt 1773 in Peebles died 1862 Lincoln. I need to find his baptism to continue finding his family. My knowledge of Scottish resources is poor, I have searched Scotlands People with no success, but did find his son another Samuel Gordon McDakin on the 1851 census.

Thank you for reading this.
