Thanks CaroleW and avm228 for your replies.
He is not the one whose dad was born Ludlow. That Henry married in 1888 and my Henry married in 1879
Yes my Henry did die in Cumberland in 1888. The reason I said possibly born Birmingham, even though he said Walsall on the '81 Census, was that on the marriage record his dad is named as a silversmith, Birmingham being a centre for silversmiths.
I have tried following the one who is a nephew as you say, with mother's maiden name James , but cannot find a birth to fit nor can I find them later on.
I've also cosidered he may have been illegitimate - possibly son of Eliza powell.  He is a grandson on the '71 Census with his grandad John.
My other thought was possibly the son of Henry and Jane (nee Wood), but would then be John Henry.  They are on the '61 C and dad is a brass caster. [RG9/2174  Fol 74 Page 22  Sch. 116 ]
Jane is a widow on the '71C but John Henry isn't there. The Henry listed, aged 9 was born 1861

The difficulty is, even if one of the aforementioned is him, I can't find him on the '71C unless he was Eliza's son.

I have searched long and hard for some info on my great grandfather Henry Powell. From Marriage record, 1881 Census and death record, he was born 1857, either Walsall or Birmingham. His marriage record, 1879, has his father as Henry, deceased.  I cannot find him on the 1871 Census although Family Search has a possible person as a scholar, inmate, aged 13.  I assume this is for a workhouse.
Can anyone find that record and possibly help with my dilemma, please?
Many thanks,  Joan

Thanks for that.  I have looked at it.

Do you know whether or not there are any records online of Birmingham workhouse admissions and departures, please?  I thought perhaps there might be some useful details there for Henry.

I live a fair distance from Birmingham so cannot reasonably visit their local records office, unfortunately.

Thanks Sami.  I've just found that myself.  I was searching to see if Henry's mother was listed in there also although I think she may have died before then.  I am working my way through it.

Henry has proved difficult to find.  I think the information on his marriage certificate was incorrect.  His father died when he was about 2 years old, and if Henry was later in the workhouse he may not have remembered, or even known, his dad's actual name.

Although I am not absolutely positive This is my Henry, I'm reasonably sure it could well be.

Many thanks to all three who replied.  The fact that he was in the workhouse could be the answer to my problem.

I knew the other Henry wasn't the correct one.

That was a very quick conclusion to my query.   Brilliant!

I need the information for a Henry Powell, aged 13, born Birmingham.

A site, to which I do not subscribe, has a record showing a Henry as an inmate in some institution.  The site to which I do subscribe does not appear to have this record.

The only source data I have is RG10  Folio 45  Page 18  There wasn't a piece number given.  The district was Birmingham All Saints.

Please, if anyone out there could possibly get the name and type of institution, plus any other info. given, it might just help me to knock down a brick wall concerning my great, great, grandfather.

     Dawn

Thanks for the info.  Have taken your advice and adjusted my profile accordingly.

     Ladyhawk

As I posted earlier this Mary is not my Mary.  I have already got the info. you have posted here but, so far, there doesn't seem to be an immediate link with the family I am researching.  Thanks anyway.

I have all the necessary info. on my Mary except her whereabouts after 1907, and her place and year of death.
