Inverness / Re: McBean/Alvie
« on: Friday 20 February 15 21:50 GMT (UK)  »
Another thread for those researching the McBean/McBains and Robertsons of Alvie:

According to Scotlandspeople, Donald Robertson and Christian McBain had twins, Duncan and Donald, born 6th May 1794 at Cluanach, Alvie.

Duncan (Milton of Dunachton) with Isabel McBain (Kintacher) had “natural” son, Alexander born 12th September 1818 at Alvie.

Isabel McBain, born 3rd April 1783 at Pitowrie, Alvie, was daughter of Alexander McBain and Katherine Kennedy.

Duncan married Margaret Stuart 19th October 1826 at Alvie.

For the 1841 census:
Duncan was a farmer at Dunachton, Alvie along with Margaret (1798) and their six children: John (1822), Ann (1824), Donald (1828), Mary (1830), Margaret (1833) and Isabel (1835).
Isabel McBain was an agricultural labourer at Kintacher, Alvie.
Alexander was an agricultural labourer at Dunachton, Alvie

Isabel McBain died 4th February 1859 at Kintacher, Alvie, “single”, “pauper” and “aged 76 years”.  The death was notified by her sister Katherine.  Burial was in Alvie Churchyard.

Duncan, “married to Margaret Smith” and “aged 75 years” (sic), died 4th February 1864 at Lynchat, Alvie.  The death was notified by son-in-law James McAuslin.

Alexander left Alvie to work on the railways.  He married Jane Morrison Cameron (Edinburgh) 22nd February 1850 at Halflawkiln, Midlothian and they had six children: Duncan (1850), Helen (1852), Lauchlan (1854), Alexander (1856), Isabella McBain (1858) – my GGrandmother - and Angus (1861).  The first five children were born in various villages along the Waverley Line where Alexander worked as stationmaster.

The 1861 and 1871 census’s show the family living in Rothes, Moray where Alexander was the stationmaster and their sixth child was born.  By the 1881 census they were living in Portobello, Edinburgh, with Alexander now a railway surfaceman.

Alexander, “railway clerk”, died 6th December 1892 at Portobello and is buried in the town cemetery with Jane, died 21st December 1899.

Angus emigrated to Australia, sailed on the SS Gulf of Mexico landed 24th March 1885.  My GGrandfather (Isabella’s husband) kept a notebook where he records receiving a postcard from Angus in November 1888.  Later in same notebook he gives an address: Mr Angus Robertson, c/o John Robertson Esq., Emerdale Station, Streatham, Victoria, Australia.

Angus married Margaret McRae 1890 and they had five children.  Angus died June 1945 at Kew, Victoria and is buried in Fawkner Memorial Park, Victoria.

Hopefully some connections can be made.

Many thanks to all for the assistance provided and apologies for my late acknowledgement.

I did check with the Crewe cemetery office where they found an early record of one burial I was after.  However, it was not at new Crewe Cemetery but at St Michaels, just up the hill.

Then, I spoke with Chester RO who had no records of the particular burials and suggested that I speak with the priest at St Michaels who possibly could have something in the church records.  Father Razzell was most helpful and he searched the churchyard records but without success.  He summized that the burials must have been in the old municipal cemetery adjacent to the churchyard.

Many thanks to all for your helpful efforts.

Best wishes,

Andrew

Sarra,

Thank you very much for the cemetery details.  They were extremely useful in helping me tie things together.  You'll see from my earlier reply to Sue that I've now got most of what I was after.

With best wishes,

Andrew

Sue,

Many thanks for all the searching you did, Angus to Margaret McRae was the correct marriage.  I misled you by giving the names of parents and siblings, Angus emigrated alone to Australia, the others remained in Scotland.

From the Argus newspaper notice found most of Angus & Margaret's children on Victoria BDM.  One listed, Margaret, wasn't there so I guess she was born in another state.  Another not listed, Angus Alexander, died in infancy.

The reason for my enquiry was to trace what happended to the siblings of my GGrandmother, Angus's sister Isabella.  All I had known of Angus was his emigration sometime before 1888.  Your assistance has helped to fill that gap so many thanks from me.

Best wishes,

Andrew

Australia / Victoria Burial, Kew, Angus Robertson, 1945
« on: Sunday 17 March 13 21:32 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for burial of Angus Robertson, died Kew 1945, aged 84, registration no. 6826.  Have checked Kew Cemetery website without success.  Are there other possibilities?

Other relevant information for Angus:
Born 28th November 1861, Rothes, Moray, Scotland.  Arrived NSW 24th March 1885, "SS Gulf of Mexico".  Father Alexander Robertson (1818-1892), mother Jane Morrison Cameron (1831-1899).
Three elder brothers (Duncan, Lauchlan & Alexander), two elder sisters (Helen & Isabella McBain).

I'm interested in his wife's name (is she in same grave?).  Victoria BMD website identifies a number of marriage possibilities which I hope to narrow down.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks for that information.  I'd would not have considered a hospital to have such a simple address.

Also, the 'occupation' section of George's death cert states he was 'of 88 Berners Street, Birmingham', which was the address of the daughter-in-law that registered his death.

Jim,

Thankyou for that.

George died in Colmore Sub-District of Birmingham, at 77 Dudley Road.  Thats all from his death cert.

I made an error with death year, it was 1933 rather than 1938.

Thanks for that information, in paticular the web addresses.

I've previously wandered around the St Michaels churchyard and the adjacent Crewe cemetery but could find no relevant memorials.  I'll now try the Chester RO.
