Durham / Douglas Hammond, Cockfield
« on: Friday 09 March 12 10:40 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for information regarding the death of Douglas Hammond born Cockfield 1935 to Emma Henderson & Robert Hammond. He was the first cousin of my mother and I think he was crushed by a crane while serving with the military (possibly RAF) around about the early fifties in Germany (I think) but I cant find anything at all on the internet or in local newspapers from the time.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hiya thanks for your answer. I did find the family in Bychton Mostyn in 1851 and Mary (who is my Great x 2 Grandmother) is the eldest listed, also going back to the 1841 census there is a Thomas and Ann Roberts in Mold with no children listed, it was the only Thomas and Ann that I could find.

Hiya thanks for your answer unfortunately I've ordered two certificates for two of who I believed to be children of Thomas and Anne but they turned out wrong, I thought parish records were my least expensive way forward.
'Roberts' in Wales is like finding a needle in a haystack.
Thanks again.

Yes it was Janelle who I was chatting to, lovely lady, sent me newspaper clippings on William Brownless.
I think I have found a connection to the Greenwells, if i am right, Jane's mother Elizabeth Simpson's mother was called Jane Elliot and she had a sister Ann who married John Greenwell and is the lady who Jane Proud is staying with at Newton Cap, also there is a John H Grenwell, a nephew staying with Abraham in 1851 so I am pretty sure it's the right family.

Yes I know of Sythe, the lady who sailed to Australia in 1878.
Have we been in contact before?

I found a birth on March 8th 1861 of Isabella Brownless (she sadly died in 1862) who's parents were Jane Proud and John Brownless. The birth certificate gives her mothers residence as Holme House Piercebridge but Isabella's birthplace as Picksley Hill,  Newton Cap.
On the 1841 and 1851 census there is a Jane Proud living at Newton Cap with John Greenwell and family, she is described as a 'niece' - perhaps she was visiting someone when she went into labour? I thought this was a big coincidence, however I haven't found any connection to the Greenwells yet.
By the way Jane and John were my GG Grandparents.

Are you looking for Jane Proud who married a John Brownless?
I found two Jane Prouds on the Durham records site, one born 1835 and the other born 1837 both around Frosterley. The one born 1837, her parents were Abraham and Elizabeth (Simpson as it turned out)
I wasn't sure about which Jane it was but I hit lucky and found a birth and death of a child called Abraham Brownless 1866 whose mother was Jane Brownless nee Proud so this convinced me I had the right Jane and she had named her son after her father.
