Twentyman GRAHAM (according to the scrapbook) was... 'assistant overseer for the parish of Ellenborough and Ewanrigg... He was a Plumbland native and a founder of the Cumberland Miners' Union...His wife (not named in the piece) had died 6 years previously...Three of his sons were teachers, the eldest a partner in a Hull firm of shipbrokers and the other son was an analytical chemist... The funeral took place in Dearham, conducted by Rev FW Carpenter' - May 1919.
(nothing about parents - sorry!)

I'm not researching Grahams (it all sounds very complicated!) but I have a newspaper clipping dated 1919 from a scrapbook collated by my grandmother (for other names featured in the book, please see thread entitled 'Maryport Families') announcing the death of Mr Twentyman Graham of Hayton Cottages, Station Street, Maryport.
He was a well-known figure and, in his younger days, was a wrestler with his brother, Robinson. He had 5 sons and 4 daughters.
If this Twentyman Graham is one of yours, I'll happily transcribe the cutting and send via PM - let me know!

The cutting is dated 23 July 1918 - and headed, 'Marriage at Maryport'
The marriage of Mr Charles Cooper M.Sc, eldest son of Mrs and the late Mr A Cooper, 98 Cranbourne Road, Ashton Under Lyne to Frances Scott.
The cutting goes on to say that Mr Cooper was 'formerly analytical chemist at the West Cumberland By-Products Works...'.
It sounds like this Cooper family was not from the Maryport area.
(If these are your Coopers, I'll happily transcribe the remainder of the cutting and send to you via PM.)

Hello!
The scrapbook includes a clipping detailing the death (and life) of Miss Hannah Penn.  It is undated, but looking at the other snippets on the same page, I am guessing it comes from c.1944/45.
The piece is entitled, 'Death of Maryport Headmistress'.
It says there was 'a large attendance of school teaching and local friends at the service in St Mary's Church, Maryport, on Wednesday preceding the internment of Miss Hannah Penn, headmistress of Christ Church Infants School for nearly 25 years.  She died a few days before her 60th birthday and three days after her last day in charge of the school.'

The piece goes on, to say that Miss Penn lived in Curzon Street and her brother was Robert Penn who was remembered as a fullback in the Maryport AFC Shield team that had been beaten by Distington in the final in 1920.  She also had sisters; Mrs Moore (Manchester); Mrs Postlethwaite (Chorley and Mrs Whitsitt of Northern Ireland.

Should this Miss Penn be your 'MisS Penn' I will happily transcribe the whole piece and send via PM.

Sorry for the delay.

The cutting tells of the marriage of Miss Jennie Cartmer (second daughter of Mr and Mrs John Cartmer, Crosby Street) to James Palmer (Wood Street) at the Primitive Methodist Church, Maryport.
It says: "The bridegroom, who is the eldest son of Mr and Mrs James Palmer, served in the Border Regiment and the intelligence Corps in France during the great war, his knowledge of languages being particularly useful in his secret service work."
Sounds interesting...
From another cutting relating to the Palmers, I understand that they were local fishmongers.
(Full transcript sent via personal message.)
Hope this is your family.

Dear HilaryW

The cutting I have that features Peter Banks is as a mention in a report of a wedding between John Dalrymple Johnston and Mary Cort Hewetson (not dated).
The piece describes this society wedding and says:
'...The path from the Netherhall Gateway and the church aisles were carpeted with red cloth, this work being undertaken by Mr Peter Banks, High Street.'

So, it sounds like your tailor/upholsterer ancestors were very much part of society at that time.

Sorry there is not more!

Dear Mrs AKY

When I look more closely at the cuttings relating to Sgt GEORGE SCOTT, it seems he was part of a double wedding ceremony at Maryport on 28th Feb 1918. He married Miss Jane Anderson whilst her sister, Elizabeth married Lance corporal Joseph Henderson.
The Anderson girls came from Hutton House and were given away by their brother, Percy. Two other sisters, Mollie and Ethel were bridesmaids.
MARTIN SCOTT was a younger brother to George and was married to Mary Alice Powell in 1920 - he was an engineer officer with the Blue Funnel Line. The parents of George and Martin lived at 16 Wood Street, Maryport.

(I will send full transcript by private mail.)
