Thank you so much to |Hackstaple and Little Nell for your swift response.  I was told by someone in the family that the origins were Jewish.  Strange because maybe they did originate from some origin like France before 1500 era and nobody seems to know how the spelling of Morye came about.  Pe

Kent Lookup Requests / Re: John Thomas Drake
« on: Thursday 24 January 13 22:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,

Okay, I have checked family search, the chatham christening  records on the medway site (all unindexed, took me three hours, no luck) anscestry doesn't have it either. I have done research on the chatham area, and it seems that there was ship building going on about the time he was born. "Mariner" is an occupation that carries on for most of the drake men further down the line, so I'm wondering a) Is there anywhere else I could try looking for his birth/christening records? I checked the medway records for st marys and i looked from 1810-1821 to cover all my bases. I found nothing. There is the John drake with parents william and sarah, but his father is listed as john drake on the marriage certificate when he married in 1838. B) can anyone tell me a place i might be able to find records of the men who worked on the boats there, and what were they called? mariners? were they part of some organization back then? everything i have stumbled across just gives the blurb about how ships were built there in chatham. c) st marys appears to be the only church in the area at the time so i am unsure where else to look. help? any ideas for me??
I may have found the Drake connection, that is if the family were aware of this distant link.In my tree I have Mildred Steward who married John Mummery. Her parents as far as I can see were probably Thomas Steward and Jane Drake,Thomas Steward was born in Devon in 1630 as was Jane Drake in 1631..The family have an explorer / mariner history.Janes father was sir William Drake 1596 and his wife margaret Westover.Sir William Drakes father was sir John Drake who married Dorothy Button.Lots of information online. He is Lady Dianas 10th great grandfather. Now I may be wrong but this may explain the use of Drake?

Hello Melbell,

the surname Sherwood appears in Robert Dawsons book on Romany genealogy as a recognised traveller surname.Other variations given are Sherrard,Sherred and Sterrard. In Hampshire,Surrey,London and Yorks between 1822 and 1911.

So you could be barking up the right tree!

I have an ancestor Ellinor sharrard who married robert desbrow in 1703.There appears to be no record whatsoever of her birth.I dont know if she was romany.Any clues out there ?

Dorset Lookup Requests / Re: Birth Record Allington Dorset 1773
« on: Thursday 04 October 12 17:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to find a birth record for Thomas Morey said to be born Allington 1773. Have looked and check other sources and have not found him. Father may or may not be John Morey  ???

The only details I have is a 20 year old family tree and I don't know where he found the birth record for Thomas as I can't find one anywhere and am now unable to ask the person who did the tree. Thomas married Mary Burtt  15 Nov 1795 Iwerne Minster  and died 1824 Durweston.

Would appreciate any help  Hello Ann, I am altering details I gave you another time according to a record on ancestry Thomas Morey 1773 tarrant gunville was son of john morey and elizabeth Huet of Milton abbass.I am also wondering if our Moreys were of gypsy origin as there were a lot of removal orderorders  ;)
Regards
Ann7
