Mayo / Re: Reap, Michael - born 1820 - Ballycastle, Mayo
« on: Sunday 14 July 13 21:54 BST (UK)  »
Hello Michelle and Springsf
It certainly sounds like our families are related since I know my Micahel and Catherine Reaps come from Ballycastle, Mayo but I have not found the connections to the other family names in my known family members. It certainly seems likely given the small area of upstate PA that they all settled in that there was some connection however, I do know that there was another Michael Reap (also a shopkeeper in Pittston) before my Michael arrived and I have not found any family connection yet though one is likely.

I do appreciate any advice you can provide on potential Reap connections to the Granahans, Jacksons, Craigs etc.

My tree is Johnson-Lebon2013. I do hope we can make some progress.
Thank you so much for your help!
warm regards
Rosemary Palermo

Hi Bob and Michelle:
Sorry for the delay in responding to your inquiry.
Been having many problems with my FTM software lately and my Ancestry.com tree got corrupted with a bad synch. Unfortunately, I didn't realize how badly for several months so now must redo tons of research from Jan to today. I am NOT a happy camper.....

Bob - I did check my old tree and do not see any O'Boyles. Been working mostly on my French side since I am in FR till Nov and have a reunion in June I am trying to prepare for....I will certainly let you both know if I find any connection once I get all the most recent research back into the tree. Thanks for the tip on St Johns' Evangelical Cemetery!

Michelle - good luck with the trip to Pittston! I hope you have luck finding more info on our Reaps.
hugs

hello Michelle:
Would you please email me at * so we can discuss further? I would be happy to send you a GEDCOM of the Reap/Neville/Maloney family I have from Avoca and Pittston, PA.  and I would dearly love to get info on the family from Ireland as the only names I have are Michael and Catherine.  It definitely sounds like we are talking about the same family and I am thrilled to have found you! Thanks so much for responding!
warm regards

Hello George
Thank you for that Obit! I do have several obits but somehow missed that one so it was much appreciated!

I am actually living in Paris, FR at the moment which is ahead of the US by 6 hours so your patience with my response time is appreciated! My son is a diplomat with the State Dept and stationed here for the next 2 years so I had the opportunity to join their family here and assist with my 2 grandchildren. It has been marvelous and since my mother was born in France and I have many French relatives, I am especially looking forward to getting more direct info on that side of the family.

I did see that there was an Anthony Reap listed in Luzerne with an earlier birth
date than yours...perhaps a relative? Ballycastle, Mayo is a small town, even then it was only several thousand people so I am sure they must all be related in some way.

Have you tried tracing them in Ireland? If you have I would love to know what worked as I am hitting a lot of brick walls there. While I have found a lot of Reaps on Griffiths Valuation, I have no way to know who might be the 'right' ones.....

Best wishes and I do appreciate any info you can send. If you send your tree, I will see if I have any info for your folks as well.
warm regards
Rosemary

Hello
I am sorry but I know of no direct connection. It is entirely possible that they were related (ie cousins) in Ireland however I have no Irish family info to base that upon. Avoca is indeed close to where they were and it is logical that a relative would have settled close to Michael since he was well to do.

I will re-check the city directories that I have to see if Anthony is mentioned in connection with Michael in any way and respond again shortly.

Do you have any info on the Reaps in Mayo? I only know Michael and Catherine - but have no other info on family there, parents, etc.....so any information would be greatly appreciated!

Good luck!

Rosemary

Hello THamilton
Thanks for your response!
I don't have much info on the Irish family members prior to immigration though I would be happy to exchange info to see if there is any overlap. It is certainly possible that Nellie Reap was a relative of Michael Reap (1820) who is in my family. I don't have his parents or any sibling info other than he emigrated with a sister Catherine (1810). Certainly likely that there were siblings in between. Do you have info on the family in Ireland?

I have posted the Johnson-Lebon family on Ancestry.com and geneanet.com. That would give you info on the families and dates of immigration. Or I can send you a copy of the GEDCOM directly if you would like.

Please let me know if there is any assistance I can provide with your research. I am retired and happy to help.
Warm regards

Thank you Heywood
I have been using all the online search sources you have noted - thank you - but my dates are prior to most of their records.

Would you have any other suggestions? I do appreciate your help!

I was hoping perhaps someone else was researching the same family from the Irish side and we might connect here.

Thank you again for your kind and helpful response. I will keep you posted if I find out more!

Mayo / Reap, Michael - born 1820 - Ballycastle, Mayo
« on: Wednesday 16 February 11 20:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all:
I am looking for any info on the Reap family.
Catherine (1810 IRE) and her brother Michael (1820 Ballycastle, Mayo, IRE).
Catherine is my Great Great Grandmother.
Parents and siblings are not known.

Catherine married Terence Maloney (1804 IRE) - possibly in US.

First child Thomas was (born 1840) in Canojarie, NY.
They then moved to Pittston, PA by 1850 where all future children were born.

Thomas Maloney (1840 in NY) married Bridget Neville (1846 in PA).
Her father was Patrick Neville (abt 1805 IRE)
He mother was Honora Reardon (abt 1815 IRE).

Her brother Michael Reap (1820) born Ballycastle, Mayo per obit,
First married Honora Connor (1827 Mayo) in Ireland. They had 2 children.
After her death he married Mary Bolin/Bolen/Bowlin and they had 9 children.

He was one of the early settlers of this area of PA. became a prominent merchant, bank President and businessman and is noted in the History of Luzerne county.

I am happy to provide source documentation to anyone researching these families from their time in the US.
Thank you in advance for any leads you can provide!

Mayo / Richard Johnson 1803 - Ballycastle, May0
« on: Wednesday 16 February 11 20:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all
I am looking for info on Great Grandfather Richard Johnson,
born 1803 in Ballycastle, Mayo - stonemason.

Married Catherine Mary Finnegan (1823) (Sullivan was 1st husband) who was a widow.
They married in Sullyhalline (?), Muckno Parish, Monaghan about 1845.
I am looking for Catherine Finnegan's place of birth, marriage records, etc.
and clarification of Sullyhalline would be helpful as I cannot find that name.

Richard + Catherine along with Richard's brother Felix emigrated to Hyde Park, Boston suburb, between 1845-1850. They then moved to Brookline, MA where the entire family stayed. Richard and Felix were stonemasons and started a construction firm in Brookline, MA. Son's joined the firm which built some of the largest churches, schools, and public works projects in MA until 1930's.

Richard's father was also named Richard Johnson and his mother was Catherine ------per his obit.

I would like to know more about them and about Richard (GGGfather) and Catherine (GGGmother).  Family history says GGGfather Richard emigrated from Stavenger, Norway and was also a stone mason who came to Ireland to build churches....

Any information you all can offer would be very much appreciated!
