Michael,

I found additional information on your side of the Cullen family in my research for my Catherine Cullen.

Matthew's eldest son, John, was born in Ireland 27 March 1847 according to his death certificate.  However, a search of the Irish church registers found that he was baptized in the parish of Dunlavin, County Wicklow, on 7 March 1847.  This is the same place Matthew Cullen and Mary Doyle were married on 4 February 1845, so it is likely he was born there as well.  The witnesses to the marriage were Edward Doyle and Mary Cullen, likely relatives.  Dunlavin lays on the northern part of  County Wicklow, bording county Kildare, about 10 miles north from Ballinguile where my gg grandmother, Catherin Cullen was born.

Hmmmm...very interesting.  My Catherine (Cullen) and Matthew O'Brien had the following children:  Eleanor (Ellen), James, John, Daniel, Margaret, and Mary.

Of course, I realize that these are very common names,  but nevertheless, Daniel and Mary are parents of Matthew with a possible brother named James.  We are just missing Eleanor, John, and Margaret at this point.

By the way, is there anyone on your Cullen side that has or had asthma?  My Catherine Cullen died at age 49 of asthma.

Maura,
The best I can determine from the 1850 Ohio Census, is that Matthew and Mary Cullen were married somewhere in Ireland as their first child, John, age 3, was listed as being born in Ireland.  Their second child, Ellen, age 1, was listed as being born in Connecticut, U.S.

Also, from the 1850 Ohio Census, there is a James Cullen, living beside the Cullen and Doyle family.  James was listed as 38 years old and married to Rosannah (from Pennsylvania, U.S.) with the following children:  Peter - age 8, Mary Ann - 6, Harriett - 4, and Samuel - 2.

James (born about 1812 from Ireland) was close in age to Matthew (born about 1815), so I would think they are either brothers or cousins.

Maura,

Interesting, I wonder if there are two Matthew Cullens as the one I have married Mary Doyle from Dublin with Matthew being born in Ballinguile.

MSchramm,

I have Matthew and Mary Cullen having a daughter Ellen born 1849 in Connecticut from the 1850 Ohio census.  Michael and Bridget Doyle, along with their son Patrick, lived with Matthew and Mary Cullen in Ohio.

I am looking for more information on my great, great grandmother who was Catherine Cullen.  She was from the townland of Ballinguile in County Wicklow, Ireland.  In researching her, I discovered that Matthew Cullen was from Ballinguile too.  Both of their tombstones, which are located in St. Patrick's Cemetery in New Matamoras, Ohio, state that they were from Ballinguile.  I believe there was some connection between the two; however, I am unsure if Matthew is a cousin, uncle, or brother.

If you find out what state and town your Edward Cullen was born, please let me know.

I am not sure I have any additional information, but if I run across anything that might be of interest to you, I will e-mail you.

My Cullen, Catherine, married Matthew O'Brien.  However, I do not know where my O'Brien family is from in Ireland at this time.

Let me know if I can help on the U.S. side.

Eneclann Ltd. sent me the following baptismal register as I was looking for information on Catherine Cullen.  Although, it may not be my Catherine as the baby's name is Margaret, it could be that her name was Margaret Catherine, and they called her Catherine because her mother's name was Margaret.

"On 2nd October 1828 Baptised Margaret of John Cullen and Margaret Gortland of Carrigaghroe.  The Godparents were James Cullen and Mary Cullen."

"On 31st December 1830 Baptised John of John Cullen and Margaret Gortlan of Carrigacroe.  The Godparents were Matthew Gortlan and Margaret Fogarty."

My Cullen family migrated to the U.S. around 1850.  However, some of their family most likely stayed behind in Wicklow.

Thanks for responding.  I am very curious about Ballinguile.  Can you provide additional information about it:  size of this townland, description, and anything else that is interesting about it.
