US Lookup Requests / Re: Michael Wilson - petition for naturalization
« on: Wednesday 16 February 11 15:58 GMT (UK)  »
The naturalization process worked like this:
You had to be in the US at least two years before filing a Declaration of Intent to become a citizen.
Then, you had to wait another three years (total of 5 minimum) to Petition for Naturalization.  I believe that whatever state you chose to file the Petition in, you had to have resided there at least a year.  So, if he came over in 1889, the soonest you would find him in Naturalization docs would be about 1894-96

Looking at 1860 US census.  Don't know if this is William.
William Gardner, age 45, laborer, appears to be single and living/boarding with the Young family in Springfield NY.  Wm born in England.

There is always the possibility that Martin was spelled differently in Scotland/England.  Somewhere along my searching, I did see a variant spelled Marten or along those lines.  I know frustration in looking for records and not finding them.

Good hunting.

Madri, it is SOOO nice to have someone going over the same records and verifying my work.  This may remain the one great mystery of my family history in which case I will consider myself lucky.

Anyone still able to look at those Methodist records?????

Sorry for the piecemeal effort.  I have found the following siblings on the same ship as Rachael:
Janet age 19, Matthew age 17, Mary age 11, James age 13, William age 27.

Unable to find the elder sib James.  I don't see him in the 1860 US census either.  No luck finding them in passenger records to the US.  Given the marriage record date of 1835 and the age of William (27= born ~1827) I wonder if Margaret was a second wife.

Good luck

Madri, I do have someone looking into obits in Norristown, PA for the date of Harriet's death.  George remarried 6 months later.  As for entering via Canada, that is possible but I am fairly certain that Ancestry would have turned that up.  Not impossible that it didn't.

I have wondered about them not marrying BUT the birth record indicates Rose's mother as Harriet Waterworth, formerly Turner.  Maybe it just didn't get registered, maybe they married in the US and returned to England (which will be impossible to find) or maybe it was her second marriage and Turner isn't the correct name.  That is why I hope there is a christening record with the Methodists.  I need another name or some piece of information.

Thanks for all your help.  If you have any ideas let me know.

How can I attach a scan of the birth record?  Looked at the directions but I am not getting the Browse box to upload image.  Never mind.
