Hi,

A quick look up on FREEREG for baptisms in Ardleigh gives:

17 Apr 1911 Harry Thomas Pitchell

marriages: 25 Dec 1898 Henry SIMONS, bride surname: PITCHELL

Burials: 20 Dec 1910 Mary Ann PITCHELL
             25 Mar 1929 Charles PITCHELL

FREEREG is quite useful and heps for future search on SEAX.

Hi Valda,

Thank you for the information. On the licence, it only says " of the age of twenty one years"  whithout the " upwards", but now, thanks to you, I realize it only means John was of age !

I really feel relieved!

Hi,

I'm so grateful to everyone trying to help, thank you so much.

John Thorp(e) was married in 1828 in Weeley by licence and his age of 21 is that marked on the licence.

I did have the information of the 1851,1861,1871 censuses, but John's baptism isn't marked on Thorpe le Soken registers from 1796 till 1802.
Yes, there was a couple Henry and Sarah Thorpe who baptized their children in Thorpe: Abraham 1792, Harriett 1796, William 1801 and Sarah 1802.  William is the one you mention Valda.

My only hope is that you suggest: a check of Weeley baptisms before 1804.

Regards,

Riboga

Thank you for the suggestion, but I already had had a look on that site.  There were many many John Thorpe in Britain around 1800 and I can't find the only one I'm interested in !

Is it possible for some kind person to look-up the baptism of one of my ancestors in Weeley?

His name: John THORP(E) ; he married in 1828 in Weeley at the age of 21

but, in the 1841 Census, he is supposed to be 45 , born in Thorpe le Soken.  He is NOT marked in the Thorpe le Soken baptisms  registers 1796 - 1810...

Living in France, it is difficult for me to investigate. Can anyboby please help?

Hi Brian,

Yes, on second thoughts, I beleive that either John remembered Thorpe as a child as you mention, or else as you said before, he was a foundling. Although there is this couple Henry and Sarah Thorpe in Thorpe.

I am very grateful to you for your help.

Best regards,

Michèle

Hi Brian,

Thank you so much for the information you gathered for me. I've never been to Thorpe and haven't the opportunity to go either, my only family in GB is a cousin in Manchester not concerned in the least about our ancestors!

It was in the 1861 census in Weeley that John Thorp, head of the family, was marked as born in Thorpe le Soken. He married Jemima Vince Ribbans in Thorpe on 2 Feb 1828, and their children were born in Weeley.

I'll have to search the villages around.

Thanks again.

Best regards,

Michèle
