Dunbartonshire / Re: Ship passenger lists - Buchanan
« on: Friday 02 March 18 06:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi aga.p
All the information I have shows that Donald was born in May of 1839. The 1851 census has him as 12 years, 1861 as 21 and his siblings Mary, John and Margaret are younger than him, then in 1871 he appears as 28, he's a boarder, his parents have passed and his age stays younger from then. So I tend to go with the first census rather than the later.
The link you attached for Donald has me confused on his death date, I have Sept. 25, 1919 as it was carved into his headstone. Could you tell me if you have his death certificate to verify the date you have.
Donald is my 3x great uncle, his older brother John is my 2x great grandfather. There is only one sibling that we can't trace after their mother's death, perhaps you have information on Catherine (Christy), she was born 1851. I didn't find any death certificate for her but it's been years since I've actually worked on the Buchanan tree.
I also heard that a few of Donald's family members made trips back to Benbecula so any information you have would be wonderful.

Those are almost impossible to find and that's if they traveled with family. They were the younger children and all the older were still in the Glasgow area for 1871 so it seems more likely they would also be in the area...but you never know. I have looked at a few but I can't see the young girls going by themselves. Alexander may have, it's just that he would  have traveled alone and that makes it hard to confirm parents for him.
I'll take any thoughts you have though

Thank you for the help.

Isabella is a sister to the 3 children in question, fortunately we already have all the obtainable information for all the other family members...if we could just trace their 3 siblings, we would be complete for this family.

My home mail is (*) it's easier to send things to.

John Buchanan (her son) was the informant on her death.

Found that marriage, thank you

Unfortunately it is not him either, he has listed "machine printer" for an occupation and the parents are wrong

You found the right parents, now if I could trace any link to their 3 children. We'd be very happy

I did find a marriage in 1870 - Alexander Buchanan married Jane Liddell, it's not him. The occupation is different on the marriage than the 1871 census. I haven't found another Jane.

Thank you for the names there, I forgot my gg-grandfather married in Bonhill.

Hi,

The family moved sometime after 1856 and were there before the 1861 census.
Parents were Angus Buchanan & Catherine MacLellan.

I'm surprised you found this Alexander, does it say where he is from? I'm going to have to go back in and take a look.

Thank you for another link to search.

Hi Barbara,

I have e-mailed and they couldn't find anything, I have since, made contact with a cousin living in Scotland that has checked the records with her memberships and the children still have not been found.

I meant to delete this post and then had a reply and was waiting to make sure they read it before deleting...and forgot.

Thank you for the reply though
