Europe / Corsican Genealogy Help
« on: Thursday 27 September 12 11:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi to all,

I'm looking to speak/contact anyone who has an insight on Corsican genealogy.
I'm especially interested to know whether there were still Italian speaking communities in Corsica around the late 1800's.

My great grandmother allegedly came from Corsica, possibly a 'Lombardi/o' family name and spoke Italian.
She would have been born around the 1870's ish.

Could this be possible?

Thanks people!

Hi Sandra,
Yes it seems a huge shame that the UK entries have been deleted... :-(

This info would have been really useful... to tie up dates and people that traveled together and even the names they traveled under etc.

Where does the Travi family/name originate from?

Interesting Stan!

So I wonder about the records made around 1890's - 1900's... I wonder if they were destroyed too....
1895 up until 1905 would suit me fine.

Hi Diddy,

That's my Gt Grandfather indeed.

I have all the records since they settled in the UK.
However, what I was wondering is whether there are records of the moment they landed in the UK.
So I can see which date and where people actually landed and what details were recorded at that moment.
Much like the Ellis Island records for passengers arriving in NY or even those arriving in Southampton etc. from the US, South Africa etc.
I seem to be able to find those kinds of records but nothing for people say who just cross the channel from Europe (if that makes sense?)

Best
Carlo

Hi Diddy,

Thanks for your reply!

Looking for a Liberato Deciantis
b.1866 - 1874
(it's a little vague as this is part of the problem!)
Could even be born earlier than 1866... :-(

It seems there are better records from people travelling in/out long distance than those crossing the Channel...

You'd have thought that at the ports they would have also had documented peoples transits... :-/

Thanks again

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know whether there are records of incoming immigrants to the UK?

I am looking to see whether my people arriving from Italy (around 1890-1910) would have been recorded/listed as they arrived/landed in the UK?

Surely there must have been some kind of Customs/Immigration at the ports no?

Any help extremely grateful!

Best wishes,

Thanks for that info.

I'm in the UK, south. I'll contact my nearest and best sized LDS centre and chat with them about ordering copies to view there.

Cheers!

Hi Marty,

Thanks for this info. Interesting. So, how does it work exactly, the rental of the microfilm?
Do you rent the periods you want and then take them somewhere to view them??

Or can you visit 'local' centres and view the records there too (without ordering them on the website)?

Thanks
Carlo
