Cork / Re: Access to 1851c Cork, Cannon family?
« on: Wednesday 02 September 09 12:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

My Sarah Cannon was born 1846 in Ireland,  just where I've never been able to find out or what year she came to live in England.

She married John Garvey (born Galway) in Oldham in 1869, on the marr cert., her father is named as Denis Cannon.  John and Sarah had a daughter Mary Ellen (my great grandmother) in 1871.  They also had a son Thomas.  Both Sarah and Thomas died in 1874, Sarah 28 Thomas 2.

Regards

Josie

Many thanks for your reply Christopher, I will see what I can sort out (if anything!!!).

I know that John Garvey was on the Oldham, Lancs 1861 census living with his widowed mother and sisters and a brother.  Still in Oldham by the 1871 census but has married Sarah Cannon by then.

Regards,

Josie

Hi Christopher, sorry for taking ages to thank you for your email, we have recently retired to Spain and that doesn't help with my reasearch......also I haven't had use of my pc for months.

My problem with the Garveys and Cannons is that I am not sure just where about in Ireland they came from.  Garveys did come from Galway, I feel sure about that, but I cannot find any record of Sarah Cannon on the Oldham, Lancs census at the same time as the Garveys are showing.  I was sure my mother had told me when I was a child her great gran had come from Co Cork.  I'm pretty certain they were Catholics but what parish or area is a mystery.

I should've done all this when I was much younger and mum still alive.......will keep plodding something may turn up some time.

Many thanks for your reply.  Regards Josie

Hi Carole, thanks a lot for trying to find something about Sarah Cannon, I think I will have to face up to it that I've come to a dead end there.  There is no family left to ask and I've no idea where about in Ireland she came from.

My mother did tell me it was Cork but I've had no luck there either, don't know what district/area.  I keep telling myself to forget it, but it keeps coming back niggling at me!!

Once again, thanks a lot, cheers,  Josie

Hi,  thanks for your reply.  I had a reply from Genes Reunited about a Sarah Cannon in Todmorden.  I have been trying to find info on her for a couple of years now without much success.

I assume she came over between 1841-1851 but cannot find any family connections other than her fathers name on the marr cert.

Hi, looking for a Sarah Cannon, she would be about 4/5 in 1851.  All I know about her is that she married a John Garvey
in 1869 and on her marr cert., her father is named as Denis
Cannon.

If anyone can help I would be very grateful, thanks.

Thanks a lot for your trouble Mary, it's been a big help.
John did marry Sarah Cannon, I got a copy of the m.c. that's where I got Johns fathers name as Patrick, after Thomas they had Mary Ellen who was my gg grandmother, sadly Thomas died as an infant and Sarah was only 28 when she died.

I found a death of a Patrick Garvey in 1861 which was of a similar age to his wife Ellen, also their son Patrick died quite young.

I'm also of the opinion that they came from Ireland between 1851 and 1861.  I can't find anything about Sarah before her marriage, only that her father was Denis Cannon.

Once again thanks for your help, much appreciated.

Cheers, Josie

I found a John Garvey living with his mum who was widowed
(his age ties up) living in the Oldham area on the 1861 census.  I wondered if it could be the same John Garvey.
He would be my ggg grandfather.
