Hi Chris
We did not know Jane and Lucy had any other siblings. We cannot locate a birth certificate. Jane's parents were John Overend and Elizabeth Parker. She was born in Bentham between 1823 and 1826. Does this match your information?

Thomas and Jane were married at St Cuthbert's Church in Darlington, Durham on 15 September 1847.

My husband and I visited the UK in October last year and stayed at Stockton-on-Tees. It was incredible just being in the same places where my ancestors would have walked. I tried to visit a few cemeteries but Kev (husband) likened it to pulling teeth so didn't really "embrace" the experience !!!

We will have to try and find some more common ancestors.

Sue

Hi.
Thanks for the post. I haven't been on this for quite some time.
We will have to compare families.

My ancestor's story:
Thomas Garbutt and Jane Overend had 3 sons – John Edward (1848), Charles Overend (1850) and Arthur Henry (1851) All three boys were born in Norton, Durham. (Jane was born in Yorkshire)
Thomas died in 1858.
In 1863, Jane and her 3 sons emigrated to Australia. Also on board was Lucy Ann (Jane’s sister) and her husband John James Wilson and their 2 young sons – William Overend and John Radcliffe (4). Also on board was Dr Thomas Burnett Temple.
Jane married Dr Temple in Brisbane Queensland in 1864.

Does any of this sound familiar?

Let me know if you think we are linked .

Cheers

Sue

Hi Wendy
Our direct line settled in Queensland.
Not sure where the Moss Vale Garbutts fit in.

Hi
Starting to find you on the family tree. Do you know Katrina?
I have a copy of Jane Temple's  will.
I also believed Jane's sister married a John Watson.
Is it possible to continue our emails privately? I would like to chat about your findings.

Hi Beth2
A very good question and one I constantly asked myself when I first started researching the family history. Unfortunately - absolutely no idea !! Sorry.  It just seems incredible that a woman with 3 young sons would move to another country. I assume you know she married a doctor in Brisbane and they had another son but the child died very young.
Who were your ancestors? My lineage is Jane Overend Garbutt - Charles Overend Garbutt - John Overend Garbutt - William Overend Garbutt - George Overend Garbutt - ME !!

Hi
It does actually still exist. On my last visit to brisbane I actually found it.
Info i found:
•   1865 – 25th March – Jane purchases “Langlands” from John Bridges. The property consisted of 76 acres and 2 roods. Langland’s – Portion 58 – bounded by: Old Cleveland Road, Panitya Street, Norman Creek and St Leonards Street. The home stood on the crest of a hill on Old Cleveland Road almost opposite where Kirkland Avenue joins it. Langland’s is the oldest surviving masonry dwelling in the southern Brisbane suburb of Cooparoo. Today Langland’s is the staff house for Villanova College, 24 Sixth Avenue, Coorparoo

Hi again.
Thanks for the extra information. While living at Mt Cotton, Charles and Lucy Garbutt had 5 children - Olive, Charles Cecil (Arthur), Emmeline (who died at 6 months of age), John Overend and Lucy Maud. In the same year of Emmeline's passing, Charles's mother, Jane, also died in 1875. Jane had been living at "Langlands" on the old Cleveland Rd Cooparoo in Brisbane. Charles's 2 brothers also died - Arthur in 1873 and John in 1878. With few family ties still remaining, Charles and Lucy packed their belongings and headed north in 1878. :)
