My pleasure,glad its of interest.
There are still a number of living Nelsons/relatives in Sheriff Hutton too.I will be making a trip there again in the 2-3 weeks, sadly for the internment of my grandmothers ashes but i will take the opportunity to have a search of the gravestones for relevant info.I do know there are several relating to Nelsons but i have only just started to work out who was who etc !.I will also try and make a trip to Terrington at the same time.
I too spent a good deal of time in Sheriff as a child and young man playing around the castle and helping my grandfather cut the churchyard grass.I know the Highwayman well too !

Sorry i can't help with Marias parents, might require a search of the relevant parish registers.I know of Knapton outside York but i didn't realise there was another near Malton.

Incidentally our original George as married to Nanny in 1804 may have been born in Ripon.I found a reference that he filled in place of birth as such on one census but i can't find the source reference at the moment.

I'll be in touch with anything of interest i can find in the churchyards as soon as poss...

A bit more info.I have confirmed my great great grandfather George Nelson as also a child of Robert and Maria so indeed an elder brother to your great grandfather Robert. My great grandfather was George Valentine Nelson son of George and cousin to your grandmother.

Slightly off your track but possibly of interest.George Valentine married Maud May Hardy in 1910 and they had three children together unsuprisingly named George,Robert and also Harry.
George Valentine volunteered for the 2nd battallion West Yorkshire Regt at Strensall in 1914,i believe he fought at the Somme and was killed in action in 1917.He is buried at Peronne cemetry in France.

My great great grandfather on my fathers side was George Nelson of Sheriff Hutton born 1852,possibly your great grandfather Roberts elder brother?.He married Annie Nelson in 1878.George had at least two sons another George and another Robert born 1889 and 1879 respectively.
Both families show on the 1881 census as living at Sherrif Hutton Bridge or Lilling which is basically the same place if you are familiar with the area.
The Sheriff Hutton Nelsons appear to have all come from the children of George and Nanny Nelson (nee Thornbourn) of Terrington who married in 1804 and had 10 children including another Robert and George !.George was born in 1779,Nanny in in1782,i have no death dates for this couple yet.

There are a lot of permutations with all these Georges and Roberts but it sounds as though we are on a similar search.I'd be interested in your progress !
