Occupation Interests / Re: Excise officers
« on: Tuesday 06 November 18 05:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi anyone that has access to the excise men records-Am unfamiliar with Athens!
The name I am wanting to find is Thomas Ronald. Our family records say this:Great grandfather Thomas Ronald (1760-1844) in his youth worked on a large stock farm in Ayrshire for a man who was in with the smugglers along the Ayrshire coast.
He, with the other men on the farm was sent on horseback to bring in the kegs of wines and other liquor, bales of silks, etc. brought from France. He changed his ways and some years after his marriage to Margaret Stewart in 1793 was made excise man. Now according to my records they were married in Paisley, I suppose this means he worked in Renfrewshire possibly anywhere between 1793--1800 This is all I know.
Thanks for any help

His son Michael was born December 31, 1832 in Darmstadt and immigrated to Pennsylvania 1849.

Looking for a family named Thomson that used to live at Bannockburn a long time ago.
Arthur Thomson born about 1800, lived at Bannockburn & became a stone mason. He married and had at least three children, Gennia who later married a man named Reid, Alexander (sandy) and Arthur Reid Thomson, who became my great grandfather.
Arthur Reid Thomson was born Jan 1, 1827 at Bannockburn (his home was made of stone & had a stone fence around it) and lost both parents when he was quite young (maybe age 5)
He & Alexander (probably born 1824/1825) were then taken to Edinburgh where they were raised by their grandfather.
It seems that they probably lived within walking distance of Leith docks.
The grandfather was an Innkeeper & kept a public coach in Edinburgh.
Arthur left Edinburgh on board the sailing ship Margaret Bogle on May 9, 1843 being 16 years of age headed for an uncles place in Rochester NY. He never made it, instead with friends he went to the Port of Quebec, then Montreal.
He later made his way into the USA settling in Wisconsin then to Nebraska.
He made contact through the mail with Alexander some years later.
I have always hoped I might come in contact with a Thomson family who had a tradition/record of a young boy sailing for America many years ago.

 Thanks for any help

Ayrshire / Re: A Ronald family of Ayrshire
« on: Sunday 02 December 12 18:56 GMT (UK)  »
Tom,
Here is  what I did, I sent a personal message  to Hugh a moment ago so i will see what happens!
Now back to the beginning...George is the progeniter of our clan & i've never even been able to find the name George Ronald in any old records. (later ones a George or two did show up.)
Anyway extracted  probate records of his time period from Ayr show  a George Ronald but i can't access them to see what they contain.
I am not a subscriber to ancestry, thats the probem.

I do suspect the Tarbolton family would connect somehow, just have to find the link.
i don't think Tarbolton was that far from where my ancestors lived.
Just looking for a little more family history on them if I could find it, a book will be published, probably within six months containing Ronald history & other branches.
Regards,
Dean
PS,
Are your interests also in the name THOMSON in Midlothian?
Mine come from there!

Tom,
Thanks for your answer,
why Midlothian? Just a mistake, I guess, I don't know if I can move it or not, guess I should read the directions.
I haven't visited roots chat for a very long time & guess i kind of forgot about  the other message I posted.
As far as getting the other Tarbolton tree, i didn't get a reply from the gentleman that I sent a personal message to, i don't know why, maybe something went wrong somehow!
so no, I am not in possession of the Ronalds, Tarbolton tree.

Ayrshire / A Ronald family of Ayrshire
« on: Sunday 02 December 12 01:01 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know anything about George Ronald or Hector or Agnes? The other two family members are fairly well researched so don't need help on them.
I would appreciate any kind of information that anyone could give me.

George Ronald married Janet Cameron Earn,( a widow with one son named James)
George was probably born circa 1735 in Ayrshire, Scotland
They did live in Ayrshire, probably along the coast and likely close to Ayr.

Their family was composed of these children:
1 Thomas 1760-1844 lived in Ayrshire & at Paisley.
2 Hector (dates unknown) possibly married at Dreghorn  6 Nov.
1772. (also a Dairy farmer)
3 William abt 1770 -- abt 1840 married Janet Blackwood Sept 1794
at Muirkirk, they lived at Muirkirk and had ten known children.
4 Agnes (dates unknown) married a Mr. Kelley and had 3 children.

Thank you for your reply about Michael ackermann, I forgot to mention his fathers name which I just found just last night on his marriage record in Pittsburgh.
The fathers name was Adam Ackermann.
I will save the information of yours.
It might make sense that an older sister was traveling with him, after all he was only sixteen years of age.
