Derry (Londonderry) / Re: Irwin: Alexander b1790 d1883
« on: Thursday 15 May 25 07:02 BST (UK)  »
Thank you for all your help.

So far Ive acquired six children all born to Alexander Irwin and Matilda Steen in Londonderry: James (b1837) William John (1838) Matilda (1839) Margaret Jane (1843) Sarah (1843).

Sarah (b1843) is interesting as she immigrated to AUS on the Lightning in 1861 with a Mary Irwin age 18 (which puts another birth in to 1843! Not convinced of the accuracy there.) Sarah died 1937 a spinster.

Have found the immigration of Sarah (in 1861 on the Lightning) and Matilda (1866 on Chariot of Fire) with Margaret (same ship). Matilda died in Prahan 1905 (DC 10439/1905) and her sister Margaret 1927 at Healesville. (DC Vic 10322/1927).

Just puzzled that Alexander Irwin has gone astray, although I did find his Death Notice in the Healesville Gazette for 10 Jan 1883, but strangely not at the Vic Registrar BDM.

Many thanks

Re Matilda:
That's much more likely info than what I had found via a dubious family tree on Ancestry.
Very grateful to you.

I've been looking at the Northern Irish archive website and found the great uncertainty.
I have no idea which town/village this family came from; by the time they came to Aus they only refer to their County i.e. Londonderry.

Daughter Margaret Irwin married James Lindsay 7 May 1871. He gave Tyrone as his County and born there in 1844.

Cheers
Appreciate your work

Matilda his second wife?
Why not? In any case how do we find their marriage registers?
Or even his death registration?
On Margaret's DC 1927 Victoria Australia, her father is known as Alexander Irwin and her mother's name as Steen. No sign of that couple migrating to Aus.

Alexander Irwin, born 1790 died 1883 married, it is said, Matilda Steen at an unknown place and unknown date. Possibly from Londonderry, but I have no certainty as I have been unable to locate any marriage reference in any database.
Apparently Alexander was father of James (1837) William John (1838) Matilda (1840) and Margaret Jane (1843) all from Londonderry. Margaret Jane married James Lindsay May 1871 in Victoria Australia and died 1927 at Atlestane, Healesville, Australia.
Your assistance would be most appreciated.

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Re: Walter Withers b1854

Hi all

Just checking re Trade Directories 1872-1880 for Birmingham, Warwickshire.
Walter Withers in 1872 in the 'Birmingham Post' is found guilty (alongside some mates) of destroying some gates of a school master.
Then, in 1878 he is at 8 Upper Sutton Street
1880 at 7 Caroline St as an engraver, lithographer
1881 Census he is at Park St, Soho.
Cannot find any Directories for 1872-1880 to see what he was up to. He doesn't appear in the 'Post' during those years.
Cheers

Thanks, I think I'm getting there:

You say: "So the older Benjamin Withers born c 1680's s of John and possibly Sarah Withers (wife buried 7.4.1714) [Is also] The brother of John, Sarah (b c1695;  later marry Southall, Joseph born 1790 and Thomas born 1795"  I have Sarah b1695 at Northfield; and I have John born c1690 master tailor.
Joseph born 1790 and Thomas born 1795 seems a bit late; perhaps a typo? Should they be 1675 and 1690?

Re Mary Pitt.
"William 2.2.1727 (who married 18.8.1750 Mary Pitt at Edgbaston )" and you also found  "Samuel 13.10.1738 -19.2.1820 Edgbaston m 2.12.1761 Mary Pitt age 22 years St Martins". I guess that would have been okay because I later found Edward Weston Withers b1762 married Elizabeth Dean in 1801; Elizabeth then married her brother-in-law William (b1767 a butcher) in 1824.

Just to reiterate:
There were three brothers John (who married Sarah, and died 1714) and Benjamin a master tailor bc1680 and Joseph (b c1690) and their sister Sarah who married Southall.

It was John and Sarah whose children incl: Benjamin b1723 a butcher and died c1780.
Benjamin born c1680 the master tailor had 4 marriages:- Sarah Wilks in1725, Mary Weston in 1733, Eliz Guest in 1747 and Mary Hopkins in 1772.

Is that okay

Just been going back over my notes and checking against yours:

Benjamin Withers b1713 son of Joseph Withars, a butcher, married Sarah Wilks 1725 and then Elizabeth Guest 1747 followed by 3 children: Joseph (b c1728) Mary (b1753) and John (b1764).

I also have a Benjamin Withers born 1723 in Birmingham, parents Joseph Withars and Rachel Brown, married Sarah Wilks 1725 (no children), Mary Weston 1733 (four children) and Mary Hopkins 1772. There are two children John Withers born Dec 1772 and Richard born May 1774, but both of them have Sarah as their mother, not Mary.

Can't find much info of Mary Hopkins, and no children from Sarah Wilks with Benjamin.

grimace

ok, well !!
My confusion deepens.

I now have an unknown Withars/Withers born pre 1690 whose Admin I have yet to check out ("John Wythers Admin 1681")
This guy appears to have had 2 children: John and Sarah. Of John: I estimate his birth c 1660, master tailor 1774. No wife.
Of his children I have John, Joseph, Benjamin, Rachel all born c 1690 and Thomas b1685.
Following your research I now add Lyddia bc1705 and Sarah , no birth date).

So far so good?
