Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with Baptism Date
« on: Sunday 02 February 14 20:33 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking through some 18th century baptism records and I am confused by some entries in the column where I would expect to see a date.  I have attached an image showing the issue with the confusing words circled.  Anyone know what these words are?

Thanks for your help.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with Cause of Death - Complete
« on: Sunday 03 March 13 14:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

Looking for some help deciphering the "cause of death" on my Great, Great Grandfather's death certificate.  I understand a few words like "Chronic" and "Phthisis", but can read it all.

Any help would be much appreciated.

So your Cluttons I think are the John and Sarah who in 1851 are in Well St, Malpas with children Emma 13, John 8, Charles 4 and Eliza 11mo - is that right? HO107/2502/358/22.

Correct - Those are my GGG-Grandparents.

Thanks to every who replied.  I definitely learnt something today ...

Family History Beginners Board / Marriage Location
« on: Sunday 09 December 12 18:02 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching the marriage of two of my ancestors, John CLUTTON and Sarah CLUTTON (Nee EDWARDS).  My research so far indicates they lived together after their marriage in Malpas, Cheshire.  Strangely enough there was another couple living at different address in Malpas at the same time with exactly the same names.  Two different John CLUTTON's married different Sarah EDWARDS.

I have found two marriages in the area showing a John CLUTTON marrying a Sarah EDWARDS.  One in 1836 at St. John the Baptist Church in Chester and one in 1841 in St.Oswald's Church Malpas. Based on birth dates for their children, the 1836 marriage appears to be the marriage of my ancestors.

Here is my concern.  John CLUTTON was born in Malpas and I would assume lived there all his life as that is where the family lived after the marriage.  Sarah EDWARDS was born in Caldecott, which is about 5 miles NW of Malpas.  I don't know Sarah's whereabouts before the marriage to John.

My question.  Given the above information, why would John and Sarah get married in Chester, which is 15 miles north of their birth places?  Why would the Parish record for the marriage in St. John the Baptist Church state they they were both "of this parish"?

I suppose Sarah could have moved with her family to Chester and the marriage occurred in Chester because of that, but why would both be said to be living in Chester at the time of the marriage?

Any thoughts or comments would be most welcome.  It's fascinating to try and imagine why things happened so long ago; hopefully I am thinking along the right lines.

Thanks everyone, this really helps as I now have a great lead on Sarah's baptism.  I guess I need to get better at spelling variation ...

Thanks again,

Cheshire / A place called "Callcott"?
« on: Saturday 08 December 12 22:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I am trying to find a birth record for one of my ancestors, Sarah EDWARDS.  She was born some time between 1810 and 1815 depending on which census record is accurate.

I have census records for 1851, 1861 and 1871 when she lived in Malpas with her husband John CLUTTON.  Cannot find a 1841 census record as I think it is probably within the 'missing data' from that census.  On the census records her place of birth is listed as follows.

1851   Callcott
1861   Malpas
1871   Callcott Green

I'm thinking the 1861 record may be erroneous (her record was just a 'ditto' of her husband's record on the line above and he was born in Malpas).

My question is  ..  Where is Callcott / Callcott Green?

I cannot seem to find a record anywhere of a place with this name in Cheshire.  Any suggestions or clues would be very welcome.

Thanks,

Phil

Alexander,

Thanks for your comments.  I never thought about looking up the day of the week, so your observation about Wednesday versus Sunday is very interesting.
