Inverness / Re: Gamekeeper - Bunarkaig, Achnacarry

I have the marriage record for Donald Cameron to Helen McDonald, the birth certs for each of their children, and census records from 1871 -1901.

I have two specific interests:
1. The history of Gamekeepers, given he was the Head Gamekeeper in Achncarry for a considerable period of time. If there are any historians with knowledge of the area, then I would like to hear from them. The web is rather vague and non-specific.

2. Whether anyone has any information on any of the children listed, deaths or marriages.

Searching on various sources has not led me to discover anything in the 1911 census record, so I am not sure if they remained in the Lochaber, Glengarry area.

Dear Scotsquinne

Not a booklet per se, but an extensive project was undertaken to index graveyard inscriptions across the highlands. Boleskine cemetery was included in this project, and listed under Inverness.

You can search and cross reference your person of interest, using their surname.

Inverness / Gamekeeper - Bunarkaig, Achnacarry
« on: Sunday 30 August 15 18:17 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find further information about Donald Cameron b.1838 - d. 1908 (Lochaber), who was the head gamekeeper residing at Bunarkaig, Achnacarry.

I am assuming he was the Head Gamekeeper for the Achnacarry Estate. He was married to Helen (Ellen) McDonald.

They had six children:
Alexander b.1865 (Aberlour)
John b.1866 (Aberlour)
Donald b.1869 (Glengarry)
William b.1871 (Glengarry)
Catherine b.1874 (Glengarry)
Mary Ann 1878-1888

John, Donald and William were recorded as under gamekeepers in the 1891 Census.

If anyone has any information on the history of the Gamekeepers of the time around the Achnacarry, Glengarry area, I would be pleased to hear from you.

Additionally, I am looking to find further information on the above listed children.

Many thanks,

MacLost

Hi Anne Marie,

There is no need to look at Crawfords in South Uist, I have researched them extensively. Thank you for your consideration.

The Archibald that you refer to (shoe-maker), was listed on his son's Death Cert. I have no further information for him. I assumed that he was also of North Uist, I would need to verify. He could well have been at Benbecula himself.

Regards,

Alexander

Hi Anne Marie

Thank you for looking up the Crawfords for me, much appreciated.

I may well begin a new thread.

Hi ammack,

I would be interested in any Crawfords that resided in North Uist. Any that preceded Archibald and those desended from him and any other Crawfords.

I realise that there is likely to be very little information, as I know that the first Crawfords did not arrive until the mid 1700's, brought from Mull to Benebcula. I believe the North Uist Crawfords are an off-shot of the original, as this was not a common surname in these Isles at that time.

Thank you Angus,

You have provided me with useful information that will add to my investigations.

Can I ask whether you know about the Crawfords who settled in North Uist. I have come across an Archibald Crawford, son of Archibald and Kate Cameron. They were at Minish and Baleshare.

Archibald Og was twice married, five and three children respectively. I wondered whether this branch of Crawfords stemmed from the original William Crawford or one of his sons.

Thank you again for the information on Hugh.

Would it be possible to PM you in future?

Hi Blue Sten,

I would like to take you up on your offer for information on North Uist crofts.

Would you be able to help me with Crawfords in North Uist. I am looking into an Archibald Crawford from Minish, who also spent time at Baleshare.
Archibald was a Shoemaker married to Kate Cameron, they had a son Archibald (1852-1934), who married twice. He had five children with his first wife Mary Robertson, and a further three children with his second wife Mary MacLean.

The son Archibald was at Baleshare between 1881 and 1891 according to Census records.

He was at recorded at Minish in the 1911 Census.

I hope that you can help.

Thank you Angus for your reply.

I know that Hugh had two illigitimate daughters with two separate women, Jane and Mary.

Recently I found an OPR for a Hugh Crawford, baptised in 1849, with a Hugh Crawford (deceased) named as the father, with the informant being Mrs Hugh Crawford.

I also know from his Will & Testament that Capt. Hugh Crawford died in Aug 1844. He obviously did not know it at the time, but his wife Catherine Cameron was pregnant with his son, and 3rd child by wedlock.

In an amendment to his Will & Testament in 1891, it states that Hugh Crawford was a resident of Carbost, Isle of Skye and that he had died in Benbecula.

It also states that his wife was present for the amendment of his Will, and that she was currently resident in Tobermory. Catherine had most likely returned to her roots, as I believe she is listed as being born in Mull in the 1841 Census.

I know that three of his daughters married and remained in Uist, but I was not aware that the youngest daughter Catherine also married in Benbecula, and there are certainly no references to Hugh Crawford the younger in the Statutory records.

Hence, I am interested to find out more about the purpose of Hugh Crawford being resident at Carabost, and what became of his wife, daughter Catherine and son Hugh following his death.
