World War Two / WW2 Service Record of my Aunt Agnes . Advice please
« on: Monday 11 November 24 13:45 GMT (UK)  »
My  Aunt, Agnes Blane Bell was my father's younger sister who sadly pre-deceased me as she died of TB at 24. Her son has asked me to assist in researching her WW2 activity however he has scant information about it other than a few photographs of her with mates in typical service overalls.

It appears that these were taken in Canvey Island and make reference to Barrage? Unit. I have tried searching for a service record on Findmypast without success. Can anyone assist?

What sort of activity was going on in Canvey Island? I imagine it was defence batteries of some description?

Which branches of Services would women be attached to there?
What roles would they be engaged in?

Any assistance appreciated

David

Motherwell Football Club are historically known as "The Steelmen"

I was born in the Maternity Home on Airbles Road spitting distance from Fir Park Street.

Came home from hospital to a "single-end" with outside "dunny" at the rear in Orbiston Street, and our single window overlooked the massive sheds of Dalzell Steel Works with the railway line into Motherwell separating.

Sorry, belay that request.

I have come across a previous posting 2019 and Gan Yam replied with the information. I should have been more careful with my files.

Cumberland / Can anyone help locating a Headstone in Carlisle Cemetery?
« on: Friday 31 May 24 15:53 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to locate a memorial (if such exists) to my great Grandmother Isabella Bell (nee Graham). She died on 3 Aug 1908 and I understand she was buried in Ward 14 Row M Plot 90 not too far from the Crimean War memorial.

My Great Grandfather survived her and he went on to re-marry.

If any regular visitors or dog walkers who frequent the cemetery could have a look and help me that would be wonderful.

Thanks in advance.

The North Lanarkshire Heritage Centre in Motherwell is also worth contacting.

I obtained information from there on lair purchases in the old Welwynd Churchyard in Airdrie.
The archivist was very helpful.
