thank you folks.   strange that my Myhertitage search (free)  came up with:
Edward Graham Mortimer
Australia, New South Wales Marriage Index, 1788-1966
•   Marriage1946                                                           -  which I was trying to track down.
it was his second marriage and he was divorced (divorce covered in local paper).
The interesting part of all this is that his bride (Leslie) was amoungst  550 Aussie brides shipped back on an aircraft carrier (!) arriving UK Aug 46. But she got radiogram en route saying he died......

Some more info on "Newlands" and the clock....

I mentioned the clock mystery to an old friend (we have played in the same petanque team for years).  I knew his house number (not name) and guessed it would be near the location of the house  'Newlands'.
He laughed and said 'that's rather strange - I live at Newlands !!'

So he had a look at some of his records and relays the following:

>From the 15th July 1924 the house was owned by Thomas and Sophia Howell and
was called Gazadine. At some time later the house was rented to a tenant
unknown. The second tenants were a Lt and Mrs Gray RN. They were allowed to
change the name of house to Newlands on the understanding that they changed
it back when they gave up the house. The dates of their tennacy are not
recorded in the documents and the house name was not changed back. The above
is stated in a letter, dated 11th November 1955, signed by Arthur Smith of
'Cooden' Catisfield, Fareham. He was one of the Executors of the will of Mrs
Sophia Howell deceased.
On the 29th November 1955 the house was sold to a Mr Cyril Gilbert (engine fitter) and his sister  Joan Gilbert (spinster). Cyril died on 23 May 1963 and I have a copy of his death certificate. Looking at the photograph of the label the name could be 'Gilbert'.

( 'Cooden' is listed as the next house to Newlands in the 1934 and 1940 street directories  -- DG)

re the query about the clock and the address:

               "Newlands"
                Titchfield Rd
                Catisfield

On investigating that address is actually now called  The Avenue, Fareham.

In directories of the 30s/40s it gives the houses on the South side going *East* from Sandringham Road as:

  SingleStack   (still there)
Veronica     ( replaced by pair of houses)
Hawkley      (name still there, but is a new build, No. 107)
*Newlands*   (replaced by 105/105a, I assume)
  Coodail (?)
  Sunflowers
  Orme Lodge

The 1934/5 Kelly's Directory lists Lt-Commander Aubrey Grey at Newlands.
And 1940/1 it's Cyril Gilbert    (the name on the label /might/ just possibly be Mr Gilbert???)

I wonder if they, or predecessors / successors,   owned the clock and sold it or willed it on.

NB - to clarify other queries about Newlands --  there is a small residential development off Highlands Road, Fareham, which is called Newlands.  I think that's only 15-20 years old.
