Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Help with Birth Record Notation
« on: Monday 25 April 11 01:19 BST (UK)  »
WOW!!

Thanks.  I have sent a note to Scotlands People for a clearer image so we will see what it says but what you say makes perfect sense.

If this is indeed what it says how does one go about seeing the entry that the note refers to?

It took you guys two minutes to decipher what we have been trying to do for an hour and gave up on.

This was written in the margin of a 1902 birth record.  This was the birth of an illegitimate child in the parish of Dryfesdale in the county of Dumfries

Paternity of child found by? ...... ??? ??? ???

One more bit of information:

Went on ScotlandsPeople and got the 1851 census record for Jean Parks.  Appears as if she was a widow.  Search same site OPR for a William Park death/burial between the dates of the 1841 and 1851 census in Dumfriesshire with no results.  Did find following:

"April 21st 1851 Buried in Kirkpatrick Church-yard William Park lately at"...... ??? ???

Looks as if record was not finished.  Doesn't look as if this is my William unless there is some reason why he would have been buried a period of weeks after his death.  I am not familiar with the geography of this area and have no idea of the proximity of Kirkpatrick and Middlebie where his family was.

More information but just as many questions.  Found William Park and family in 1841 census as described below on Ancestry.com living with another family:
Walter Johnstone Age 40
Jannet Johnstone age 40
Mary Johnstone age 15
Isabella Johnstone age 10
William Johnstone age 8
Margt Johnstone age 3

Searched 1851 census for William Park with no luck.  Did find the following again Ancestry.com
Jean Park Head of household b abt 1803 age 48
Isabella Park Daughter b abt 1838 age 12
William Park Son B abt 1841 age 10

Searched 1861 census found following Ancestry.com:
Jane Park Head of household b abt 1802 age 59
Mary Park Daughter b abt 1829 age 33
William Park Grandson b abt 1853 age 8
Thomas Park Grandson b abt 1857 age 4
Jane Park Granddaughter b abt 1860 age 5 mo

Searched 1871 Census found following Ancestry.com:
Jane Johnstone Head of household b abt 1808 age 63
William Park Grandson b abt 1853 age 18
Thomas Park Grandson b abt 1857 age 4
Jane Park Granddaughter b abt 1852 age 19 ?????????????

Searched 1881 census found following Ancestry.com:
Jane Park Head of household b abt 1802 age 79
Ann Park Daughter b abt 1841 age 40
Mary Ann Park Granddaughter b abt 1873
This family is living at Lauries Close Cottage which is where Jane Park died in 1882 at the age of 84 years of age.  The informant of death was Thos Park Grandson.

I believe that this may be the same family through the years.  Not sure why the switch from Jane to Jean and back as well as the back and forth between Park and Johnstone.  Ages bounce around a bit as well.  There are as many discrepancies in the information as there are things that appear to be too much the same for coincidence.

I would appreciate any comments on this information and the likelyhood that this is the same family through the years :-\

Hi Steve:

I stopped for supper and when I got back on my computer there were all of these posts.  You were able to accomplish in a short time what I had spent the afternoon trying to do.

I was not aware of the freceen.org.uk site.  Thanks for this valuable source.   I had been using a 14 day trial on Ancestry.com and having no luck on this one.  Thanks for the info.  I will check out your other links and hints.  I have used the SP site and have had great luck but had not been able to crack this one.  I will look at what you have done as it looks like I could use some pointers.

Again thanks for all your help.  This is the very reason that I like this site so much
Stuart :)

Thanks for the help and information.  Will give scottishpeople website a go.  We are searching from Nova Scotia but do plan a trip this summer to Scotland.  Be really interesting to find as many GGparents as possible in cemeteries there.

Your statement below which says........"The poor man died from a lacerated thigh and back, and shock, after 2 days following being injured by a bull.   The information was given by Elizabeth Rogerson, his daughter, who had been present at the death.
Hope this helps" .......made my wife remember that her grandfather was very adamant that the kids be very cautious around the bull on the farm where they lived.  She was just four when her grandfather died but the story rang a bell.  When talking to her brother (six years older) he remembered the story very well as did her mother.  The story is that William Rogerson died after being attacked by a bull on the farm where he worked after coming home from church.  He supposedly went to the barn with his "Sunday clothes" on and the bull did not recognize him.  The oral history also had that he suffered a day or two before he died.  I checked the perpetual calendar and 22 April 1895 was a Monday!  All very interesting and seems to verify that William is our man.

We have found William in the Scotland 1861, 71, 81 & 91 census.  Married and family.  Have  possibly found William Rogerson  in 1851 Scottish Census as a 20 year old  agricultural labourer living in Kirkpatrick with a family of Browns.  Have also found a William Rogerson in the 1841 Scottish census as an 11 year old agricultural labourer living in Wamphray, Fingland Outhouse #1 with what appears to be three others.  Cannot find him with parents in any census

Some questions come to mind:....1. Was it common that an 11 year old to hired out as a labourer?   2. Are there Scottish census available before 1841.  All of the information that I have got here was on Ancestry.com so not images but transcriptions.
