Update Re William Henry Edward Wilkinson:

Following your helpful detective work I have since obtained my grandfather's birth certificate and am able to confirm that he was indeed William Henry Edward Wilkinson b.18.1.1887 in Kennington.  The birth certificate confirmed his father as Henry Richard Wilkinson and his mother as Clara Jane Mostran.  So thank you all for your help.

I have since joined Ancestry and am gradually fleshing out the bones of my family but my grandfather still remains much of a mystery with little evidence of him beyond the age of 4 in the 1891 census, his marriage to my grandmother Lilian Maud Tabor on 5.8.1913., and a possible death in October 1962.  My grandmother remarried in 1941 so if William was still alive they were either divorced or she committed bigamy.

This new photo has only just been discovered and is almost certainly of my grandfather holding my father as a baby (b.11.11.1914).  It is one of just two photos and the only one of him as an adult.  I recently posted it in the Common Room hoping that the uniform would provide some extra info...but unfortunately without a great deal of luck despite members' best efforts.  He remains a mystery...but not quite the total mystery he was before your help!

Kind regards, Fred

Hello Hackstaple - He's a very elusive man!  He vanished into thin air a few years after marriage and, as far as I know, was never seen again.  My grandmother had a child by another man in 1922 while she was still married, and she eventually married someone else in 1941, so presumably she was and her first husband were divorced by then.  I believe I found a death cert for him under William H E Wilkinson of Ealing in the 1916-2005 Death Index for 1962 at the age of 76.  I wish I knew more!

His full name is William Henry Edward Wilkinson, born 18.1.1887 in Kennington, London.  He married Lilian Maud Tabor on 5.8.1913 in Hackney, London.  His father was Henry Richard Wilkinson b.1861 and his mother Clara Jane Mostran b.1860.

Cheers, Fred

Hi Ainsley,

His full name is William Henry Edward Wilkinson, born 18.1.1887 in Kennington, London.  He married Lilian Maud Tabor on 5.8.1913 in Hackney, London.

I've scanned his right shoulder but there's not a lot of definition...the last character looks like a 7.

Hello Hackstaple,

Thanks for your input.  There's an Edward Wilkinson from Kennington  b.about 1888 in the Tank Corps in the WW1 Service Records, and a William Henry Wilkinson, a 2nd Lieut. gunner in the RFA in the WW1 Medal Rolls Index Cards (Regimental number: 1620, 680443)  - but no idea if either are him.

Regards, Fred

Hello - this is the only known photo of (hopefully) my Grandfather William Henry Edward Wilkinson b.18.1.1887 in Kennington. I am pretty certain the baby is my father William Frederick Horace Wilkinson b.11.11.1914.

I have only just obtained my Grandfather's birth certificate but beyond that nothing personal is known of him as he split from my Grandmother within a few years of their marriage, and was never seen again.  If it is my grandfather he would be about 27 or 28 when the photo was taken.

This photo has just been discovered and comes as something of a revelation as I have another believed to have been taken at the same place and time with my father in the ams of an older lady assumed to be his grandmother.

Any help in identifying my grandfather's Regiment and Rank, or anything else relating to him, would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks,  Fred

The Common Room / Help identify date and place of birth please
« on: Sunday 20 February 11 00:15 GMT (UK)  »
I am struggling to identify the date and place of birth of my grandfather William Weir.  He was said to have been born in, or lived at, Arthur Street, Edinburgh.  In 1906 he marries Jane Elmer in St. Georges, Hanover Square London. His 1914 regimental number was M2/033659.

I'm new to genealogy and would appreciate some help.  As William Weir is such a common name, is there any way of identifying his birth date and place of birth?

Many thanks, Fred

I would like to thank everyone for their wonderful efforts in attempting to answer the unanswerable...indeed we have failed (to date) but it was great fun trying!  I haven't quite given up on the search and I'll keep you posted if I have any joy.  Kind regards to all.  Fred

Hello - Can anyone help to locate the whereabouts of this house in Peacehaven?

My wife, her sister and parents spent many happy holidays between the late 40s and 50s with her uncle Joe (a former jockey) at his prefabricated home and smallholding which bordered farmland in Peacehaven.

I would imagine it has long since been demolished and developed, but it would be nice to check its whereabouts.  However, all we have to go on is this photo and the following:

Uncle Joe: George F Hollier b.26.12.1891 - 1978 - known as Joe (no idea why)
Aunti Lottie: Charlotte Elizabeth Boniface B:12 Jan 1899

Address: Fairseat, Peacehaven (a smallholding).

Thanks, Fred

The Common Room / Update - help with ID numbers on Photo
« on: Sunday 06 February 11 23:27 GMT (UK)  »
This is a small passport-size ID photograph of my Grandfather William Weir.  The back of the photo is plain.  He lived and worked in Brixton as a cabbie for a great many years, and I imagine this photo was taken some time during the 1940s.  It was suggested that the numbers referred to his cab or badge number.

I have now heard from the London Taxi people who say that no badge numbers were issued with a letter, and the number is far too hight to be an early cab driver badge number.  Most if not all of the early taxi records were destroyed during The Blitz so tracing anything prior to 1948 is very difficult.  All PCO (Public carriage Office) photos were without drivers wearing any sort of headgear.

So...any other ideas?

Regards, Fred
