Thanks Jim for bringing my attention back on to this site again.
Yes, I wrote on The Old Warrenpoint Forum but find it very hard to keep up with all the different sites.
My archive of material has been filed away at present due to a house move but will be keen to get back on here again once I get sorted.
With thanks to all who have helped me over the years. :)

Thanks Jim for all of this.  I'm firstly going to try and find out a little more about The Tannery in Rathfriland and see if I can find his name registered anywhere as he was defnitely a Tanner.    It would be good to find out what Number his house was on Castle Hill.

Thanks,

I shall defnitely consider joining the Emerald Ancestors so as to have constant access to material unless you can suggest a better site that I should join, that would cover North and South Ireland, in more detail than:-

Ancestry.co.uk that I belong to.     I prefer to join this sort of thing for a year so as to make it easy to use it as often as I like.

Would appreciate your advice on this.

Lynn.

Hi Jim,

Can you tell me what UHF stands for please.

The William Harriott Mayne is the correct one and his wife Anne Mayne {ne Newell}   -    I didn't have her death date so I thank you for that.

When you say Emerald what do I look up for that.  Shall look under Emerald right now and see if I can find it.

Lynn.

Hi Sam,
No, unfortunately I don't have a number of a house on Castle Hill and I thank-you for the information on the two Tannery's.  I shall follow up on the 1st Rathfriland Presbyterian Church and see if they have any records re him possibly being buried there seeing that that was the church that the daughter called Anne got married in, in 1829
I'm pleased to know that there is a graveyard attached to the church.
Sam, When you Google, 'Castle Hill' do you have any idea what the old, very extensive building is on the right hand side, going up the hill.

Thanks Jim,  I've found rosdavies site very helpful and very informative.
What I would like to find now would be birth and death dates and try and piece to-gether the family of JAMES NEWELL of Castle Hill, Rathfriland.
Did he live, I wonder, on Castle Hill or was there a factory on Castle Hill etc.
At the moment I am just finding the Three daughters :-  of JAMES NEWELL

ANNE Newell who married  William Harriott Mayne on 6th Oct 1829 and is buried in Clonallon Graveyard, Warrenpoint with her husband, but the writing on the gravestone is very well weathered.

ELIZABETH Newell who married Nathaniel Mayne on 7th May 1830

MARY Newell who married John Hopkins. She died 3rd Nov 1880 in Belfast, and is buried in Hillsborough graveyard. Her husband died 27th March 1858.

I wonder if JAMES NEWELL was killed in the war but I haven't followed that up as yet.

If any one can add to this for me or make any corrections whether it be to dates or spelling of places etc. I should be very grateful.

Lynn.

Thanks Jim,   your doing well here.  When I Google Castle Hill, Rathriland I'm finding a very old building there with a hugh hop like thing sticking up. I wonder if that may have been a Tannery as he was a Tanner.
