Dublin / Re: Seeking Kavanagh family at 158 Townsend Street, Dublin (1890)
« on: Sunday 31 August 25 13:01 BST (UK)  »
Is this chap, who was in the Dublin newspapers of 25/26 February 1890, related?
Myles Kavanagh, grocer's assistant, 158 Townsend Street, charged with having on the Monday evening assaulted Patrick Butler, assistant in the spirit shop of Catherine Murray, 100 Townsend Street...

Great find, Jonwarm — thanks for sharing!

Mary Ann and Patrick had an uncle, Myles Kavanagh (1847–1923), so this could well be him. His brothers John and James were both in the DMP in Dublin then, which makes the Townsend Street link even more interesting.

Did you come across it in the British Newspaper Archive? I’d love to know which paper carried the report...... Thanks again

*UPDATE*
Found the newspaper Article - Evening Irish Times - Wednesday 26 February 1890

What line of work was he in?

Hi dublin1850, the family came from a farming background — though I don’t know what Patrick’s occupation was in Dublin.

Thank you — that’s a good point. You’re right, all the record shows is that Felix was the informant on Catherine’s 1894 death, and nothing more can be said for certain about Patrick’s whereabouts at that date. My interest is really in tracing Patrick after he was recorded at 158 Townsend Street in January 1890, so I’ll keep looking for later records that can place him either in Dublin or (as family lore has it) in Liverpool.

Hello,

I’m trying to trace my great-granduncle Patrick Kavanagh, born 14 February 1869 at Burton Hall, Murphystown, Dublin. He was the son of James Kavanagh (Gardener/Farmer) and Catherine (née Kavanagh).

His sister Mary Ann died in Dublin in January 1890, with Patrick recorded as informant and resident at 158 Townsend Street. Family tradition is that Patrick went to Liverpool soon afterwards.

🗂 Research Timeline: Patrick Kavanagh (1869–?)

14 Feb 1869 – Born Burton Hall, Murphystown, Co. Dublin son of James Kavanagh, and Catherine Kavanagh.

21 Jan 1890 – Sister Mary Ann dies at 158 Townsend Street, Dublin; Patrick (≈20) present at death, residence also given as 158 Townsend St.

10 Oct 1894 – Sister Catherine (“Kit”) dies at Bolinrush, Wexford; brother Felix present (suggests Patrick absent by then).

Family tradition – Patrick emigrated to the UK, likely Liverpool, in the 1890s.

Possible fate – May have died in Liverpool before 1911.

Current research gap: I’m looking for him in the 1891 census (likely Liverpool/Birkenhead, possibly Manchester/Salford or London dock districts), and for any sign of him in local death indexes or Catholic parish registers after 1890.

If anyone with access to the 1891 census (Liverpool/Birkenhead/Manchester), LancashireBMD death indexes, or the Ford/Yew Tree Catholic burial registers could check for Patrick Kavanagh (born Dublin 1869, son of James, labourer), I’d be hugely grateful. Any sighting, even as a boarder or a death entry, could be the missing link in connecting his story after 1890.

Many thanks in advance,
John

Dublin / Seeking Kavanagh family at 158 Townsend Street, Dublin (1890)

Hello,

I’m researching my Kavanagh family who were at 158 Townsend Street, Dublin in January 1890. My grandaunt Mary Ann Kavanagh, aged 19, died there on 21 January 1890 of phthisis (tuberculosis). Her brother Patrick Kavanagh, then aged about 20, was present at her death and gave the address as his residence.

Parents: James Kavanagh (1834–1922) of Rathpierce/Bolinrush, Co. Wexford, and Catherine (née Kavanagh, c.1845–1928).

The rest of the family were in Wexford at this time, so Patrick seems to have been living in Dublin separately.

Family lore says Patrick went to the UK soon afterwards.

🗂 Research Timeline: Patrick Kavanagh (1869–?)

14 Feb 1869 – Birth registered at Burton Hall, Murphystown, Co. Dublin (son of James Kavanagh, labourer, and Catherine Kavanagh).

20 Feb 1870 – Sister Mary Ann born, Killiney.

1870s–1880s – Family back in Bolinrush, Co. Wexford.

21 Jan 1890 – Mary Ann dies of phthisis at 158 Townsend Street, Dublin; brother Patrick (≈20) present at death, residence also given as 158 Townsend St.

10 Oct 1894 – Sister Catherine (“Kit”) Kavanagh dies of phthisis at Bolinrush, with brother Felix present. Suggests Patrick was no longer in Wexford by then.

Family tradition – Patrick emigrated to the UK (Liverpool area) in the 1890s.

Current research gap: I have no confirmed record of Patrick after Jan 1890 in Dublin.

If anyone has access to Dublin parish registers, workhouse/hospital admissions, or knows of records listing Townsend Street tenement residents in the 1890s, I’d be very grateful for guidance or lookups. Even the smallest lead might help confirm Patrick’s presence in Dublin before he disappears from the Irish record.

Thank you in advance,
John

Afraid I haven’t been able to establish if that is fact or fiction. Have spent hours reviewing newspapers on The British NEWSPAPER Archive but came up with nothing. Imagine an incident involving a lightening strike would make the newspapers.  The actual cause of death is registered as acute phthisis (TB) and Heart Failure.

Good evening everyone,

Finally getting back to my brick wall (again) :D

As suggested in a previous post above, I am now pretty sure the Patrick Kavanagh I am researching lived at No 4 Hague Street North Manchester, Prestwich (1901 Census). I have just received a death cert for Patrick, who died at the age of 35 on the 30 Aug 1904 at No.4 Hague Street. His wife is listed as M.A. Kavanagh. The 1901 Census lists Patrick as single which narrows down the years locating a marriage cert. I have just ordered two potential marriage certs from the GRO so hopefully one of these will prove conclusive.

What is the likely Cemetery for Patrick to be interred in?

Regards
John

I agree Hillhurst, it’s back to the drawing board, I wouldn’t mind but everything was fitting in so nicely there for a while. Nevertheless, great progress has been made since posting this thread and it’s thanks to everyone who contributed.

Much appreciated!
John
