Lancashire / Re: Liverpool's Horse-drawn Tramways 1880-1890
« on: Friday 28 October 11 20:53 BST (UK)  »
My Grandfather John Edward Murphy is on the 1901 and 1911 censuses, he was a tram driver with Liverpool Corporation, he lived in Kerr Street off Breckfield Road South up until WW1 when he enlisted in the Kings Regiment.  His father Patrick Murphy lived in Celt Street/Whitford Street off Whitefield Road in the late 1800s he was also a tram driver until he died  in 1902. Patrick is on earlier censuses where his job was described as a coachman, I understand he drove a horse drawn tram.  I have been trying for some time to find their records  but without success. I'd be grateful if you could help or at least point me in the right direction.

World War One / Grandad Murphy

I have discovered that my Grandfather fought in WW1. I never met him and as far as I know there are no family photos. He was in the 5th Btln Kings Regiment Liverpool from September 1914 until he was demobbed in 1919. He received 3 medals the 1914-1915 STAR the War Medal and the Victory Medal. I noted that he was wounded from an application for information re his pension. I do not know how badly he was hurt.  Are there any records of individuals? I wondered if there was anyone who might have photos of these soldiers. I can only guess what he might look like. Any help would be appreciated.

Roxburghshire / GGG GParents william and helen oliver
« on: Sunday 20 February 11 23:55 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching the Oliver family from Cavers Roxburgh. My GGG Grandfather was William Oliver b. c1790 married to Helen nee Mason b. c1790. I do know they had a daughter Agnes b. c1820. Agnes Easton Oliver married William Brodie a land steward, I do not have a date. Agnes died in 1882 in Edinburgh. I don't know where the Easton part of Agnes' name comes from or where Agnes and William lived. I would be grateful if anyone can help and if there are any Olivers still in the area I would be delighted to  hear from them.

I have discovered my maternal G Grandmother Mary Walsh who was born in Kilkenny c1838 married Martin Walsh a jouneyman shoemaker who was the same age, in Liverpool in 1861. Her father was William Walsh. Due to both parties having the same surname I am at a loss how to proceed researching my ancestors. I would be very grateful for any help.

My Great GFather Richard Dentith Maynard aged ?twenty married Jane Cannell in Liverpool in 1859, according to the marriage certificate Richard was in Masseult? Jane was in either Duckenfield or Luckenfield the writing is difficult to decipher. Her age is also in writing rather than numerals. It appears to be nineteen and she was born in the Isle of Man probably c.1840.  Richard's father was John Dentith Maynard and he was a butcher. Jane's father was Thomas Cannell who was a shipwright. I wonder if there are there any other Maynard decendants out there besides me? Any help would be much appreciated.

Isle of Man / Isle of Man ancestors
« on: Saturday 15 January 11 21:48 GMT (UK)  »
My GGrandfather Thomas George Brodie was born in 1857 somewhere on the Isle of Man His father's name was William Brodie and his mother's maiden name was Agnes Easter or Eastor
Oliver. Thomas was a butler in Glasgow when he married Euphemia George Brown from Athelstaneford. Thomas arrived in Liverpool during the 1880s and settled as a licensed victualler in St James Street  where I located him and his family on the 1891 census. However he disappeared from the radar after this.  According to information on Thomas and Euphemia's marriage certificate both his parents were deceased. His father William had been a Land Steward. I wonder if there is anyone out there who could tell me how to find out where William had worked if he had worked in Scotland or the Isle of Man and if there are any living relatives. Heres hoping.

My GGrandfather was Richard Dentith Maynard b. Liverpool in 1839.He was a corkcutter and still employed in 1911 at the age of 72! He married Jane Cannell (b.1840 in the Isle of Man). My paternal  Grandfather was Thomas Andrew Maynard b 1881 in Liverpool. He married Margaret George Brodie in 1904 in St Peters Church Street. I cannot find any trace of Thomas after 1911. I wonder if there is anyone out there related to the Liverpool Maynards?
