Thanks for a speedy reply

the furthest back I have managed to get is as follows:

All from Great Hallingbury (about 3 miles from Bishops Stortford) in Essex

William Howard b circa 1823 married Rebekah Piggott b circa 1831 in Q2 1848 in Bishops Stortford

Their children were
Mary 1850
Martha 1856
Ellen 1860
Lucy 1863
Alfred 1865
Stanley 1869

I have found no siblings for William or Rebekah and cannot fing their parents. Great Hallingbury is a very small place.

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanking you in advance for your efforts. Len

We are completely stuck on trying to get further back with the Howard Family from Great Hallingbury. The furthest back we have got is 1830.

Nothing on IGI and no trace on anyone related to them before this date? Any suggestions?

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Workhouse query

Hi Pauline

There have been cases of where the Husband has a job but they have nowhere to live. Sometimes the wife and children would go into the Workhouse so they were not on the streets till the Husband found a place to live.

By claiming not to be married or seperated they could stay.

Contrary to popular belief, it was possible to leave the Workhouse if you wished. I have a file on Hatfield Admissions and Discharges 1834-61 and there are hundreds of cases of people taking their own Discharge.

Hi Emma

Thanks a lot as this seems to tie in with a bit of information I had about Leonard Arthur, who was my Grandfather. It seem that Louise remarried for some reason.

I appreciate your help as I have now really got my teeth into this and while still a beginner I have managed to get back to 1865.

Once again. Thanks for your help. Len

Hertfordshire / Alfred Joshua MAYLIN born Hitchin 1865
« on: Sunday 27 March 05 19:34 BST (UK)  »
I am an essex Maylin but found out today my great-grandfather Alfred Joshua Maylin was born in Hitchin in 1865. He married Louise Willis in 1888 in Barnet and they had at least one child - Leonard Arthur Maylin who died about 1927 1927.

Having been only doing my Family tree for 7 weeks I am delighted to be 7 generations back and would appreciate any information about the Hertfordshire side of the family.

Thank you for reading this.

My Mother was Mabel Joyce Maylin (nee Brewster) who was born in the Romford Area on 5th November in 1920 or 1921). She had brothers and sisters but I never met any of them. Am wondering if anyone has any details of any of them. Her Mothers maiden name was Grice. Would appreciate any bit of information - no matter how small. Thanks for reading this.

My Father was Bertram Alfred Maylin who was born on 25th November 1922 and lived in the Romford Area at the time. His father was Leonard Arthur Maylin and his mothers maiden name was Lucy Chamberlain. As there is no evidence of a marriage Certificate it is assumed they both just shared the same name.

I know he had brothers and sisiters but have no details of them as I never met any of them. I need details of any of them that you may know. I believe he had 5 or 6 brothers and sisters.

Would appreciate any help. Thanks for reading this
