Norfolk Lookup Requests / Norfolk Lunatic Asylum
« on: Sunday 06 November 22 22:32 GMT (UK)  »
Would anyone be able to look up case record for Elizabeth Bonnett who was admitted to the Norfolk Asylum on 18 September 1900 and died there on 25 Apr 1905. She was born in 1860.

Norfolk Record Office tells me they hold female case books from St Andrew’s Hospital, one of which covers the dates Jan 1900-Oct 1901 (reference: SAH 292) and on page 74 of this, is a double-page spread of case notes and a small, passport-sized photograph of Elizabeth Bonnett.

Unfortunately I am unable to visit NRO and consult this information as I live abroad.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you may be able to provide.

Thank you again, Max and Steve, for the additional information. Unfortunately the originator of the photo is unable to provide a close up of the buckle (but she thinks the second letter is an O and the first possibly an L).

Thank you all for your interesting and helpful replies.

Regorian, thanks for the link to the uniforms. Yes, George's uniform looks very similar to the one of the "second valve trombonist".  Also, it says "The photographer was W. Russell of Albion, New York so we must assume this bandsman was also from somewhere near there. However Albion. is a small village in Orleans County, NY on the Erie Canal about half way between Rochester and Buffalo. It's more likely that his band came from one of those big cities centers."

Interestingly George lived Port Hope, Durham, on Lake Ontario, opposite Buffalo and Rochester. However, looking at the distances it's unlikely that he played for a band in Buffalo or Rochester.

SiGr, will go back to the originator of the picture to see it's possible to get a close up of the belt buckle.

Armed Forces / Help with British Army Uniform (late 1800s)

Hello,

I am hoping that someone can help me to identify this uniform (which I assume is British Army).

The man wearing it is my great-great uncle, George Samuel Smith. He was born in Islington, London, England in 1853 and emigrated to Canada in 1887.

He was a musicien.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Back again.
I am looking for help to decipher some information in the Chelesea Pensioner record http://www.findmypast.co.uk/chelseaPensionerShowImage.action?sdrfnbr=971262192 of John Smith (born in Lesmahagoe, Lanark, Scotland in 1783; Royal Artillery 1803-1816).  At the time of his discharge, he was bombardier in Capitain H. W. Gordon's Delachs (?) Company, 8th battalion of the Royal Regiment of Artillery, of which Lt General J. Macleod was Colonel Commandant.
I had hoped that this information would help me to find out more about where he had served, etc.  However, I found hardly any information about H.W. Gordon during this period.  Also I'm not sure what the word "Delachs" (or "Detach") signifies.  If anybody can help I'd be most grateful.
Also, the discharge record I got from the Chelsea Pensioner records (via findmypast) is referenced WO 97/1262/192.  There is is another record (which I can't access online) on The National Archives site referenced WO 97/1262/189.  The subject is "JOHN SMITH Born LESMAHAGOE, Lanarkshire Served in Royal Artillery Discharged aged 33", covering date "1803-1816" I am not sure whether or not this  contains the same information as WO 97/1262/192 or if it is a different record.  Again, any I'd appreciate any advice anyone can give on that.
Thank you.

Many thanks for the additional information, Gortonboy.

I have now downloaded the discharge record from findmypast.

Thanks to all for pointing me in the right direction.

Hello,
I am also looking for a Chelsea Pensioner: John Smith who was born in Lesmahagoe, Scotland in 1783 and died in 1869 in Islington, London.
He was a "living out" pensioner.  According to the 1861 UK census he was a "Chelsea pensioner - Royal Artillery".  I guess he would have served in the Napoleonic Wars.
I would be most grateful if anyone could confirm that or provide any additional information.
Thank you.
