Australia / Re: Alfred CLUNEY b. London abt 1831, d. Sydney 1873

It's kind of weird there would be a comment on this 18-month-old thread the day after I was looking at it.

Alfred was not really tried on a murder charge.  The suspicion that he was involved was rejected at the first hearing before a magistrate.  I don't think it was even what we would call now a committal hearing.

There are numerous other slightly different versions of this.

I would assume it was a suicide.   Carbon monoxide poisoning by car exhaust was quite common in those days.

sabrina,  this doesn't help you much,  but if you go down to eagle street you will see the monument of JD Heal, mayor of brisbane c. 1879.   He arrived on the Persia also.

I recall reading a quite detailed account of Helena Rubinstein in Australia in the newspaper several years ago.   My recollection is that she lived somewhere near Colac. but I don't recall now.

If he died in 1855,  you may be out of luck,  because the civil registration in Australia didn't start until 1856.

The only problem with the one near Mudgee/Dubbo,   is that the lead mine was not discovered in 1882,  and the name of the area then was "Denison Town".     There were some Latimers there though.
