I'm sorry to  hear that. He did us a great service by setting up the database and I hope somebody can take it over and maintain it.
In the meantime there is also Bryan Richard's database of Swansea Mariners at "www.swanseamariners.org.uk/swanseamariners.php" which has fairly comprehensive records of men and ships.

This, of course, touches on the perennial question of how we can retain and maintain useful databases once the originator has to drop out.

Still there and searchable at https://www.welshmariners.org.uk/index.php.

Doesn't seem to have been updated since 2018. Hopefully it is being maintained,.

Technical Help / Re: Converting to Windows11 from Win10
« on: Sunday 18 May 25 06:27 BST (UK)  »
My apologies for the delay responding, I have been unwell.
Thanks to all of you for your advice, in particular Andrew who has put the issue into perspective for me.
As I am only a basic user of my PC, and don't need unnecessary extra expense, I think I will stay with my Win10 setup supported by the usual barriers.

Technical Help / Converting to Windows11 from Win10
« on: Friday 28 March 25 05:09 GMT (UK)  »
Microsoft say my Win10 machine is not compatible with Win11 and cannot be upgraded online. I presume therefore that this is a hardware problem but M'soft do not advise what needs to be added to make the machine compatible.
Any advice, please ?

World War One / Re: WW1 Ribbons

It is very hard to discern the ribbons from the photo, 'though I agree that there seem to be four of them. Any chance of a better copy of the photo ?

That said, could he have served in the Territorial Army or another volunteer service at some time between the wars ? Could the additional medals be Efficiency and/or Long-Service medals ?

Could he have Police or Fire Service medals, which would be worn after the WW1 service medals ?

I wasn’t doubting his rise through the ranks so much as finding it surprising – my entire family is as working class as they come (and proud!) and it seems to me that class divisions were difficult to overcome in military ranking.

Your explanation about “dead men’s shoes” makes sense though.
The class division was between Officers and Men ("other ranks"). Almost all "other ranks" professional soldiers in this period came from "working class" backgrounds so it was quite normal for talented individuals to rise to senior NCO and Warrant Officer status.
As Jim1 observes, once WW1 developed, suitable individuals could then be commissioned as officers.

World War Two / Re: Identifying Regiment/Group etc?
« on: Wednesday 20 November 24 01:13 GMT (UK)  »
I'm glad to hear your query has been solved.
As a matter of general interest can anybody identify the uniform of the corporal in the dark uniform with his hat (?) at an unusually rakish angle, and his legs crossed, on the far left of the group. He may be from Allied forces, Free French or similar, but I've been unable to find any similar uniform ?
