Australia / Re: Cowley of Amherst or Daisy Hill
« on: Thursday 19 May 16 04:49 BST (UK)  »
Thank you Bitzar. It's amazing that I have found one family line with some information about them. The majority of my lines - especially the main ones - were I think, hiding under stones at every census, possible family gathering or at any time anyone was keeping records of anything.

But that's the thrill of the chase and makes it even more of a thrill when something is found.

Oh and I should add that Harriet is my 3rd cousin 3 times removed. Not a close relationship - but a relationship nevertheless.

Kind regards - June

Thank you for the reply Bitzar.

Rosball thank you for the links I will enjoy checking them out. - The time frame is from about 1850 onwards.

Mollipops thank you for your information. The names you mention are definitely from the family I am after because I notice the name Albion and the surname Sarah Morgan. These were two of the names I found in my tree and it was on checking what I could find of them that I found they had moved to Australia.

Hopefully I will be able to help someone else some time.

Kind regards - June

Australia / Cowley of Amherst or Daisy Hill
« on: Thursday 19 May 16 01:26 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping that someone may be able to help me please.

I have just found a connection with the Cowley family who moved from Gloucestershire England and made their way to Amherst and Daisy Hill.

If anyone has any information they would like to share, grave photographs or hints about the family I would love to hear from you.

I realise my request is very general and apologise for that but it is a new line for me.

Many thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Burial of Leslie James Coates
« on: Sunday 01 November 15 20:59 GMT (UK)  »
My uncle Leslie Coates died in Doncaster Infirmary in 1933 at the age of 5.

Many years ago someone was kind enough to send me details of where he was buried (and I think it was Hyde Park Cemetery but I could be wrong).

Due to computer crashes etc I no longer have this information. I have done a search of obvious sites but can find nothing. I wonder if there is anyone on this site who might be able to help me.

Thank you - Alex

Kildare / Re: Curragh Camp. Regiments
« on: Sunday 21 November 10 07:41 GMT (UK)  »
I have stumbled on this thread by accident but it half answers a puzzle I had.

My Great Grandfather was Arthur Thompson Coates who was a soldier. I 1882 he married Lizzie McManus who was born in Belfast. My grandfather Henry Coates was born in Buttevant.

My great grandfather's records (some bits of which I have been able to find show that)

He was recruited at Richmond, Yorkshire on December 2 1880 by the 5th West Yorkshire Militia. Service details include Private 4th Corps November 26, 1880,  Private York Brigade Depot February 21 1881,  Signed on for 12 more years at the Curragh Dublin January 3 1884 Bandsman December 20 1883. Private June 12 1886 Transferred to Private 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment November 12 1890 Transferred Private to King's Own Yorkshire Ligh Infantry October 1 1892 Discharged as a private February 16 1893 after completing service. He resigned and subsequently spent 13 years in India and some time in South Africa.

One of the things I had been interested in was about the Curragh - I had no idea what it was and had put it to one side and told myself I would find out about it later. Now I have come across your site. Would you have any idea of a site which could give me further and full information as to exactly what the CUrragh was. From reading the postings it was obviously an army site for many regiments but I would like to learn more about it and also I wonder how my great grandfather would have come to be there and resigning there.

Thank you

June

 ???

My great grandparents are William (born about 1840 WOS)  and Maria Bullock (born 1865 Blaisdon) (nee Portlock).

In 1861, 1871 and 1881 they can be found either as singles living in the WOS area.

In 1901 they appear in the census for Castle Frome Herefordshire as a family.

I am trying to track their movements between 1881 and 1901. I know that they marry in 1885 in Barnwood and that there children are born in Berkley.

In the 1901 census there is

William Bullock, 41, Ag Lab, born Westbury on Severn
Maria Bullock, 34, born Langham Glopucestershire
Arthur Bullock, 15, Carter on Farm, born Barnwood
Henry Bullock, 13, Carter on Farm, born Barnwood
Beatrice Bullock, 11, born Berkeley
Agnes Bullock, 10, born Berkeley

My problem - I cannot find them anywhere on the 1891 census.

Any suggestions as to how I can find them would be very welcome.

Thank you.

June
