Monaghan / Re: CORBETT, JAMES and family
« on: Monday 01 September 25 09:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Some bits and pieces to add to this thread.
I've been researching Breakeys, and have found various bits about this Corbett/Breakey family. The various messages on the now archived but still useful Rootsweb message boards indicated that James Corbett had (not British Army) but local militia connections, and also to the Madden estate in/around Hilton and Carnroe in the Clones/Currin areas of western Monaghn. The Griffiths Valuation of around 1856 has the following - too late I know but it might suggest this is the area of origin for your James: Carnroe townland primarily owned by John Madden and with the following Corbetts, Robert, 15 acres, Samuel 14 acres and James 30 acres.  Also in the same townland is a John Tuite who is recorded to have married a Breakey.
If the family were CoI then there are some early records for At Andrrews, church Scotshouse, ? Currin parish? but I'm not sure where thesr records are located and what they cover. If you've done DNA this might also throw up possible new avenues!
Good hunting.

Monaghan / Re: McCauley from Clones

Hi
No information directly on McCauley or Breakey/Breaky/Brakey, but if the family originated from Clones then the Breakey side at least could connect to a Breakey line from the area around the townlands of Lislea/Lisleagh, Corrinary (and various spellings), Carnroe and the area of Scotshouse, and parishes of Clones and Currin. If've you've done DNA then you could find some links to Breakey and McCauley through that. There are some quite old records from St Andrews CoI church of Scotshouse, but I'm not sure of where these are now located.
Maybe this helps. If you find anymoe on the Breakey side, I'd be interested

Hi
More about reliability of sources than the apecific topic. Wikitree tends to be more reliable that eg Ancestry, as you have to have at least 1 source of evidence to enter a profile, and other people can and do make/suggest chnages if it look like it doesn't"stack up" Find a Grave is variable - it's the boigraphy details and sometimes inter-linking of grave memorials to other family members that can be dodgy. I've taken to suggesting bio details where I know those to be accurate to memorials with no bios or changing those which I know are in accurate.

The "Canada" bit in Ancestry's previous title for this dataset was inaccurate and misleading. They've changed it now, to "UK".

Re Matthew Dancey, the continuation of his record on the next page shows that he was transferred to the Royal African Corps on 23 December 1823. Can't see any other military records for him at the moment.

Hi Shaun
Thanks. I've not currently got an Ancestry subscription, so I'll check the WO 25/440 series again to see if I can find the page you refer to (hopefully it's the next image). Having done an internet search on the Royal African Corps it seems that they were disbanded between 1821-23 and prior to disbanded had received replacement troops from 60th Regiment, so now I'm wondering if Matthew was originally enlisted to 60th? But I guess that part of my query doesn't belong here!

Armed Forces / Re: Royal African Corps question - searchng for matthew Dancey/Dancy
« on: Thursday 17 October 24 09:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Likewise I find the various dates for the disbanding of the Africa Corps/Royal African Corps, confusing. I'm tryng to find out more about a Matthew Dancey (or variant spellings, Dancy, mis-spellings Daney, Dency etc). So far, I've got he enlisted (? 58th Regiment?) in 1819, in Cavan, Ireland, aged 21, a labourer from Co Monaghan. He would have been a private, He is listed in the WO 25/440 series (image no 61 on the National Archives website). There is a note on that, that he served in the East or West Indies from 1820-1822.
It appears (but I can't check as I've nos subscription) that Ancestry now have these records, and that there is a following "page" ?image that gives he was transferred to the Royal African Corps 1823. If this is correct, then where would the unit have been stationed from 1823? I know there are few records of the unit. There is some reference to the African Corps receiving some replacement troops from the 60th Regiment, so I'm wondering if in fact Matthew was originally enlisted in the 60th rather than 58th. Following the African Corps disbanding, is it possible the remainder of the "ordinary" men were sent to the West Indies?
Any help much appreciated
Roz

Hi
I've posted this also on  58th Regiment in Ireland in 1819? Enlistment of Matthw Dancey

A Matthew Dancey, of ?Crosserlough, Co Cavan Ireland enlisted in 1819 in Cavan aged 21 (apparently) He was a labourer. The record of this is on Ancestry, on the Canada Regimental Registers of Service and they have indexed it as Matthew enlisting in the 58th Regiment, but this may not be correct.  The image to the record is from the WO 25/440 series (image 4 of that series from the National Archives). But I'm not even sure if he was enlisted in the 58th - the enlisting officer was a Lieut Thornton. (On the same page, there is also enlisted a Pocerage Dancey fron Monaghan who joined 1822 aged 18 and he did join 58th Regiment).
On the enlistment list it's note that Matthew apparently served from 1820-1822 in either the East or West Indies. I'm trying to find any other records/documents that may show if he was killed in service, or settled in the place of his discharge, or any further service. Any help much appreciated

Monaghan / Re: Death of Jack Storey, historian/genealogist of County Monaghan

Late in finding this and sad to hear of his death. He was a committed and dedicated researcher, wanting to both help people and to preserve the history and family history of Monaghan. I hope all his collections of BMD etc are being preserved and can be accessible to future generations too
