Cheshire / Re: Mottram in Longendale - Hodge Hall [Hole?]
« on: Friday 20 February 15 09:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Olive,
I'm not sure that I mentioned the Bowers family - I think that was prbibby. My first family connection to Broadbottom was via Edward Moss, again mentioned by prbibby. Edward Moss was born in Mossley in 1756 and, as prbibby says, he was the son of Arthur Moss and Martha Hardy, both Mossley people.
In or around 1784/5 Edward Moss, a joiner at the time, accompanied his Uncle, Edward Hardy, up to Cark (near Cartmel in the South Lakes) where they worked in a mill (Edward Hardy was a partner in the mill along with Joseph Ryder and Joseph Thakerey of Manchester, Thomas Slatterthwaite and James Stockdale). In 1785 Edward married Margaret Harrison at Cartmel Priory.
By 1796 Edward had moved to Broadbottom (not sure of the exact date, where he worked in the mill, but in the meantime he went into partnership with 2 others to build his own mill at Broadbottom (Check my post of 7/3 2011). The first time I am aware of him living in Hodge Hall was in 1799 as he was paying land tax for the Hall. I am not aware of any history of the hall prior to that.
Edward's wife, Margaret, died in 1807 and he subsequently re-married to Betty Sidebottom who was much younger than Edward. Edward had 9 children with his first wife and a further 4 with his second wife.
Edward's mill business was not a great success and eventually lead him close to bankruptcy. He made many attempts to sell the mill, but to no avail. In 1834 he committed suicide in The Angel In in Mottram. Soon after Edward's death many of his family left Broadbottom with my ancestors moving back to Mossley, where my family history continues.

Thanks for the information Roger.
I had assumed, based on baptism and marriage records, that Betty had been born in either Padfield or Hadfield (not sure how I came to that conclusion) but now realise that her likely home was the Warhurst Fold which is just across the river (and County Boundary) from Broadbottom.
If may be worth trying to trace these Sidebottoms via Derbyshire records office?

Hi Roger,
There are several death registrations for "Betty Fitton", but the ages don't tie in with a birth in 1793.
A great pity that Thomas didn't live another 2 or 3 years so that we could have checked the 1861 census to see if Betty was still with him!
My view is that Edward's suicide was more related to his failed business and lack of success in selling both the business and the property - he could well have been very short of cash by 1834. If jealousy was involved then is it more likey that Betty had found another man???
I visited the Broadbottom area a few months ago with someone who was descended from Margaret Moss (daughter of Edward and Margaret). I had tried to get access to the derelict mill site, but the lady who owns the farm was not willing to allow me into the field - very dissappointing!
I was in Mottram last night and thought about Edward as I drove through the village and past the site of the former Angel Inn - amazing to think that a relative died there nearly 200 years ago.
Out of interest, how does your line come down from Edward?
Jeff

If you give me a better description of exactly what you are looking for e.g. full names and whether B/M/D I will try to help, but I can't guarantee a timescale.

Hi Holker,
I was involved in the previous discussion regarding Edward Moss. He was my 3 x GGF.
My family descend from Edward's first marriage, to Margaret Harrison, rather than his marriage to Betty Sidebottom
I suspect Moss Lane was named after him as he was involved in the mills at Broadbottom. He built the now derelict mill which was just to the east of Leylands Lane. The mill was researched by The Greater Manchester Archaelogical Unit some years ago.
To come back to your main area of interest, I did have noted in my records that, following Edward's death, Betty (probably) married Thomas Fitton. I have not gone too far down this line as my interest there is limited.
If you want more information about Edward Moss by all means get back to me.

In view of the fact this is a very old post, can I check that you are still interested?
If so, I do have comments to offer for discussion!

Very belated, but my interest in the Kenworthys of Mossley is fairly recent.
Like many, I have problems distinguishing the many John Kenworthys born early 1800's in and around Mossley.
As you mention, one John Kenworthy's married Jane Milburn at Manchester Cathedral on 27 Aug 1827 and they appear to have had four children:-
1) Isaac Milburn Kenworthy b 1832 who married Mary Whitehead at St Michael, Mottram-in-Longdendale on 25 Jul 1853,
2) Mary Ann Kenworthy b 1835
3) Hannah Kenworthy b 1837
4) William M Kenworthy b 1840 and married Harriet Blanchard in 1860 (probably in US).
A quick check suggests that there were at least 7 John Kenworthys baptised in Mossley between 1800 and 1810.
The John Kenworthy I seek married three times:-
1) to Betty Buckley 3 Aug 1829. They had three children - Kitty 1830, William B 1831 and Mary (who I believe to be my Great Grandmother) in 1836. Betty died in 1838.
2) to Jane Brooks on 3 Jan 1843 at St Michael, Ashton-U-Lyne - no known children.
3) to Mary Dewan/Cahill in Mar 1859 at St George's, Mossley - again no children.
I believe that John died on 13 Jun 1872.
I am working on the basis that this John Kenworthy was the son of Thomas Kenworthy (1774-   ) and Hannah Taylor, but I could have picked up the wrong John Kenworthy.
The John Kenworthy who married Jane Milburn appears to have been based more in the Stalybridge/Dukinfield area rather than Mossley, so I have assumed that these were not the same family.
I am happy to discuss further if you are still interested.
