Perthshire / Re: 1781 location of Margdow of Drumchaoin
« on: Tuesday 24 February 26 23:19 GMT (UK)  »
Interesting little puzzle.

We had the baptisms of Duncan McIntosh's five children and had not bothered to get all of the locations as they were outside of 'our' parish of Blair Atholl. As we knew that 1st and 4th were Drumachuine we assumed that the others were likewise.  We are using the spelling 'Drumachuine' as that is the title used by the heir to Clan Robertson, even if the Clan no longer owns the land.

Angus Campbell and his wife Janet McDiarmid were living at Black Park of Drumachuine in October 1781 when their daughter Janet was born / baptised (Blair Atholl OPR). Their first child, Margaret, was born at Black Park of Murlagan in July 1770. Now Murlagan is the old name for the Dunalastair estate (i.e. Robertson), and Black Park is just to the north of Dunalastair. After the '45, the Forfeited Estates Commissions tried to settle goverment ex-soldiers at Black Park as a sort of militia. The whole area was deep-ploughed and a deep drainage ditch dug to change the moorland into reasonable land for crops and livestock. The settlement 'Maragdubh' is just to the west. In Gaelic it means 'Black Pudding', so it was encouragement for a tenant - rich black soil!

Anyway, this is a sort of area that you are looking for, not the Killiecrankie site.

It may seem strange that the baptisms of children born at Drumachuine and Drumcastle are mentioned in the Blair Atholl OPRs as they are not in that parish. James Stobie's map of Perthshire, 1783, shows Easter and Wester Drumachewan to the west of Mount Alexander (Dunalastair). It also shows that it was in a detachment part of the parish of Logierait, surrounded by the parish of Fortingall.

Detached sections of a parish often arose when a principal land-owner possessed small pieces of ground in distant places, and this may be the case here. Drumachuine, and Drumcastle next to it, were part of the Duke of Atholl's estate. In January 1738, two of the Dukes vassals, Donald McDonald of Sandwick and Alan Stewart, wadsetter of Innerhadden, agreed to an exchange of land. Alan Stewart gave up his right to Drumachuine and Drumcastle to Donald McDonald who, in return, gave up his right to Innerhadden to Alan Stewart.

It looks as if the stones are burial markers, but without inscription. Thanks Isabel.

Perthshire / MIs in Glen Fincastle
« on: Thursday 29 January 26 21:44 GMT (UK)  »
Does any kind soul have lists of the monument inscriptions at Chapelton of Fincastle?

When James Seaton surveyed it in 1974 he indicated that there were another four MIs, which he did not record, in the same line as 7,8,9,10 who are McKenzies in Ardtulichan and Balintoul.

We assume that they are from the same families, and the data would be useful.

Would you like to re-check your data as we are not finding these baptisms.

The only one for Archibald Campbell dated 15th June 1773 appears to be in Muckairn (Argyll and Bute)

No idea, but here is our data from Drumnanagnach, at the top of Glengirnaig, which may help.

John Campbell 6,7   Anne McDonald   Moulin parish   William   23 Jul 1756 Moulin OPR
John Campbell   Ann McDonald   Drumnanagnach   Christian   17 May 1764
John Campbell   Ann McDonald   Drumnanagnach   Duncan   6 Feb 1772

6 John Campbell and Ann McDonald, married 7 Aug 1755 (Moulin OPR).
7 John Campbell's brother was Duncan Campbell in Loin Conlach, and they shared Drumnangnach with Duncan using one-third.

They used to say that Shinigaig was remote, well this one was just a bit further!

Canada / Re: Rannoch Robertsons to Pictou, N.S. 1801
« on: Monday 21 July 25 20:22 BST (UK)  »
While digging around for the Invervack Robertsons, we seem to have drifted off, back to the 'Sarah' passenger list of 1801.

Having looked at the list again, we are fairly certain that all of these Robertsons 'from Rannoch' are from Blair Atholl parish (as some of the monument inscriptions relate), but in particular they seem to be linked to the Bohespic area of the parish.

We have spoken about Donald Robertson (Over Bohespic) and Janet Campbell (Nether Bohespic), also James Robertson (Over Bohespic) and Cirsty McGilliwie/Lamont (Gaskan of Bohespic).  Here are observationa on some of the others.

a) John Robertson, tenant; Janet Robertson, spinster

John Robertson in Gaskan of Bohespic married Janet Robertson in Gaskan of Bohespic, 11th November 1780 (Blair Atholl OPR) but no children are recorded as baptised in the Blair Atholl OPR.

b) Alexander Robertson, labourer; Elizabeth Robertson, spinster; Donald Robertson (13); Janet Robertson (11); Duncan Robertson (5)

Alexander Robertson in Over Bohespic married Cicel Calmanach (alias Dow) in Achinruie of Glenerrochty, 19th December 1787 (Blair Atholl OPR).

Neither Donald nor Janet had their baptisms recorded in the Blair Atholl OPR and we believe that Cecil Calmanach died after the birth of Janet in 1790.

Alexander Robertson in Over Bohespic married Elspeth Robertson in Nether Bohespic, 31st December 1793 (Blair Atholl OPR)

Their son Donald was baptised 4th September 1796 (Blair Atholl OPR) and we think that this is 5-year old 'Duncan' in the passenger list

That just leaves two entries:  James Robertson, labourer;  and Donald Smith, tenant; Smith, his wife, spinster.  There are no people with the surname of 'Smith' in the parish - it would have been 'Gow' or possibly 'McGlashan' but, as all of the other families were Robertsons, our gut feeling is that this was Donald Robertson, the blacksmith, and his wife.

If you go to James Stobie's map of Perthshire 1783

https://maps.nls.uk/view/74400314

You will see that there is a settlement north of Balnabigan and south of Guay and Balintuime.

It is called 'Lead', so we think that your 'inlaitt' is meant to be 'in Lead'

Midlothian / McGlashan families
« on: Saturday 21 June 25 09:23 BST (UK)  »
We are looking for family connections concerning James McGlashan, chairmaster in Edinburgh, in the 1740s onwards. We have documented proof that he originated from Invervack in Blair Atholl parish, the son of James McGlashan (MacGlashan / Mackglashan etc)

His first wife was Agnes Williamson, daughter of William Williamson, upholsterer in South Leith.

Second wife was Elizabeth Wat or Watt, daughter to William Wat, turner in Dalkeith, later in the Canongate parish.

There are several children from each marriage, some with uncommon forenames such as Dick and Moore (male). Some of the baptisms are not obvious on ScotlandsPeople as the Edinburgh OPR has incorrect forename for James McGlashan.

There also is a John McGlashan, merchant in Edinburgh, who seems to have been a relative.
