New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Joshua CLAPHAM 1823-1913
« on: Sunday 26 August 12 14:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Joshua and Maria CLAPHAM are both buried at Karori Cemetery in the Church of England section, plot 125.

Also buried in this plot is:
Charles CLAPHAM (farmer) who died c.6dec1892 aged 72y (b.c1820)

Joshua's brother?? If so, it's most likely that Joshua provided the details for the death registration ...

Could be worth a try?

Some background:
KORORAREKA was the original name for the rather wild and almost lawless trading settlement that became (in 1844) the township of RUSSELL in the Bay of Islands. It is in the (old) provincial area of Auckland.

Kororareka was famous/infamous in the South Pacific as a 'den of iniquity'. Whaling and sealing vessels used to use the port for food replenishment and 'r&r' for the crew! There were a lot of pubs ...

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Marriage for Charles William Meade
« on: Monday 23 July 12 11:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Wonder if this is Florence:

Marriage 1924/4647  WALKER Karl Verne - MEADE Florence Rebecca

Florence was born 12dec1899; died 1982
Karl was born 1900, died 1983

This would mean Florence was 15-16 when she married Charles but at that time girls could legally marry at 12-13 years of age.

There is also this entry which may be their son:
DEATH 1998/3660  MEADE Charles William (born 1aug1917)

Best wishes

Hi
Have a look at 'Papers Past' on the NZ National Library website.

'NZ Truth' 20 january 1917, p5 describes the court case where his wife is trying to get maintenance from him. Has background about his activities and gives some dates for his travel.
Also:
7 July 1916, p2
6 december 1916, p6

Sounds an interesting man!!

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Ronald Kennedy, adopted child
« on: Friday 01 June 12 12:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi
If you've been provided with the birthfather's name, grab it!!

At that time maternity homes, etc looked for some recompense for looking after young women especially considering that they were usually staying up to 6 months instead of the 10-14 days after the birth.

If the family wouldn't or couldn't assist financially, then the birthfather was usually approached. Mary may have also gone to court to get an order for financial support. If that was granted then the Salvation Army would have recorded his name so they would know who the payments were supporting.
Congratulations on getting the court info - it's great to see successes in this area.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Rankin family
« on: Monday 07 May 12 17:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I see what Althea means (Reply #3) about the marriage of Eva to Mr Rankin.

The marriage entry reads: 1926/4412   ANDREW Eva Ilie May  to  RANKIN Albert Edwards

which points to the 1902 birth of ANDREW Eva Hia May to parents Esther March and Martin Casey ANDREW

So, not probably not your 'Eva' - just possibly a little wild goose chase in the making.

Maybe a check of the newspapers for the deaths of Irwin and Nancy will throw up some clues.
Best wishes
