Hi,

As far as I'm aware only my GGfather (Paternal) Mark Tolley b1873 d1938 was recorded as a boat steerer in the 1901 Census, he was based in the Horseley Heath area of Tipton at the time.

Do I say thanks? For completely blowing my head apart?

Your help has been invaluable, particularly the link from which I know I will get the right answers via a couple of birth certificates, now I need to rest my weary eyes; thanks again.

There is a record of a marriage at the pepperbox between William Tolley and Elizabeth Hollies, we all know how names have changed over the years.

How about this birth from freebmd - I'll bet my pension that his mum is Emma Hollis

Births June qtr 1870   Benjamin Tolley    Dudley  6c 31

That's what I've been thinking.  But who was the other kids mother(s)? bit of a rascal if you ask me.  His birth registration has him as Tolley so I'm guessing William was the father, although on the census he appears as Hollis.

Oh, just found a marriage between William Tolley and Emma Hollis in 1875.

Seems like a bit of a ladies man my GGGfather.

Utterly confusing, using the UKBMD link (thanks Carole) I have located a couple of people who should guide me in the right direction.  Looks like a trip to Sandwell reg's office very soon.

Thanks for that Manchester Rambler, now I'm even more confused ???

Another look has me pretty convinced they are the wrong one's, as I have Benjamin as born in 1870.

I assumed the 1873 one was Mary Upton as it is a Mary he lives with in the 1881 census?

That would be them, or so it would seem.

Looks like I need some certificates.
