Hi Ken,
Thanks so much for your private message.  I have tried to reply via email, to send you a family tree, but for some reason it does not want to leave my Outbox.  I wonder if there is an error in your email address - though it looks pretty simple to me.  Would you like to message me again with it?

I am the 5x great granddaughter of John Harvey who died in Menorca
via
John's son Nicholas Harvey
His son Richard Nelson Harvey
His son Nicholas William Harvey
His son, and my great grandfather Nicholas Charles Harvey

Interested in finding out more about the shipbuilders Harvey & Staffell

Viv,
I just found this thread today, and thought I would hasten to tell you that - because of my Harvey interest - I bought a booklet "Rye Memories, No 20, Rye Shipping" by Richard Horner, and published by a local-history group.

To paraphrase a bit:
Staffel and Harvey, both with first names JOHN. The yard began in 1762 as the boatyard of John Stoffel senior [name changed to Staffel in 1798].

Nicholas Harvey (son of John H, who d 1784) acquired a sail loft in 1829 from George Staffell, who died in that year.  So George Staffell was a sailmaker until that date.  [Today the sailmaking premises houses the Rye Visitor Centre!]

Marinerclark,
this same booklet has quite a lot about the Clark(e)s.
John Clark(e) - a ship and boatbuilder, set up in 1753 below the Ypres Tower - was the grandfather of Thomas Staffell Clark, boatbuilder and bargebuilder of Rye.
Also the great grandfather of William Evans Clark.
John Clark married into the Staffell family.
Samuel Clark managed the boatbuilding yard in 1867.
Thomas Staffell Clark was b 1798; nephew of John STaffell and grandson of Thomas Clark, and d 5 Dec 1883.  He had a yard near Strand Quay.
william Evans Clark (c1829-1909), son of the above Thomas, had a yard on the W side of Winchelsea Rd in 1869.

It looks as if Thomas Staffell Clark married Margaret Winser.
They had a daughter Sarah Winser Clark, who m (1) James William Smith (drowned in Rye Bay) and then (2) (?Capt) George Bayley.

Does all this make any sense to you?  I must admit, I have just tried to draw up a rough tree, and can't quite make it fit.  If you PM me an email address, I'll scan some of the pages for you.

Gosh Viv!  Fancy all those wives!
That does indeed help make sense of things a bit, now that I can link him to so many spouses.

I wonder if the Hannah who was NH's first wife might have been nee Baker.  I found a marriage of a Nicholas Harvey to Hannah Baker in St Olave's church, Southwark, in 1729.  Of course, there's nothing to prove that it's the right one, but Nicholas and Hannah's child Lester was born in 1730...

Sorry to have been so long replying;  I forgot to check the thread for a bit!

Many thanks for the further info.

Thanks Chris, the churchyard plan arrived fine just now.

Marinerclark,
the Nicholas Harvey who "unfortunately drowned in Rye Bay", married to a Mary Lilburn/Lilborn/Lylbourn, is  my 5xgreat grandfather.
Yes, there were an awful lot of "Nicholas Harveys"!  I do find them a bit confusing, I must say...

Viv,
Looking at one of the Nicholas Harveys mentioned in the E43 inscription above, "... Captain of the 'Cumberland'
who was lost with his wife and crew Sept .. 1829 aged 29"; this chap appears to be slightly off to one side of my tree.
I have come across the 1831 baptism, in Rye Baptist church, of a Nicholas Cumberlander Harvey; parents James Harvey and Ann.  It seemed such a strange middle name, that I can't help wondering if it might be connected with the couple who died on the Cumberland in some way.  In the 1861 census he is a painter, living in Hastings, as "brother" of Martha Golding.

Hi folks, me again...

Marinerclark, I notice the name Lilbourn in your signature.

"CLARK Waite Ashley Gravett  Vousden Lilbourn Rye Sussex,"

In my records, I have the Nicholas Harvey who "unfortunately drowned in Rye Bay" as married to a Mary Lilburn/Lilborn/Lylbourn. She was baptised in Rye 1712; parents Philip and Mary.
Any use to you?

Hi Viv,

I  came across your thread, as just tonight I have come across the same inscriptions on the Harvey famiy (bought the booklet of Rye inscriptions at a genealogy fair last weekend!) and was scouring the web this evening for any information on the demise of the Cumberland.

My cousin and I are delving into the Harveys of Rye, and the E43 batch, at least, certainly sounds like "ours".  Haven't checked out the others yet.  We visited Rye last summer, and managed to find Rock Channel House.

Our Harvey relatives later went to Portsmouth, London and Warwickshire.  Does this tie up with yours at all?

Angela

EDIT
PS  Chris, I was not "allowed" to download the churchyard plan that you have affixed to your post.  Maybe I do not have enough posts to qualify to receive attachments yet, or something?

Do you know what, Suzannah?  As soon as I had posted that, I thought "Hell, it's only £11, and a trip to Lewes would cost a lot more than that, so it's worth a try!"
They sent the username and password immediately, so I was on their site in minutes.

They are transcripts, so it hasn't helped with the name that I think might be mistaken.  But there's so much info on line that it's very useful in piecing together other families with the same name so that I can confirm or disprove any connection.
BUT there is a gap in the births index between 1799 and 1812, which is just the point where I could see the next generation's connections.  I'm just about to email them to see if the originals exist or not.  Also, I couldn't find any Marriage records, although the main list implies there are some.  Maybe they're still working on them.

Wish my broadband wasn't on "go slow" at the moment; it's very frustrating w-a-i-t-i-n-g for pages to load.

Happy hunting!

Hi Suzannah
This is a rather old thread, I know, but I too am interested in consulting the Rye parish records - but would like to see the written version (original, or scan) rather than a transcript, as I suspect the name of one of my ancestors has been mistranscribed in the IGI.

What form were the records in on the SFHG site?
I am trying to see if it's worth joining, or whether I should make a trip to Lewes.

Hope you found what you were looking for!
