Westmorland / Re: Longsleddale families

Hi, I've just come across this post - my wife is also decended from William Kellet & Ann Wilson. A couple of bits of info I can add:

Thomas Kellett, soldier age 35, married Sophia Patient on 30 Nov 1858 at Southwark and his father is shown as Thomas Kellett, farmer. I had assumed he was Thomas Kellet son of Thomas & Isabella baptised at Longsleddale on 9 Dec 1821 (IGI) - and that Thomas is the son of William Kellet & Ann Wilson.  As his age varies a bit in the censuses I hadn't worried about it being a year out on the marriage record, but I may be wrong.

On the original post, I've got a tentative baptism from IGI for Abigail Todhunter at Threlkeld Cumberland on 17 Jan 1723 daughter of Dav Todhunter. Parents would be David Todhunter & Elisabeth Robinson married at Threlkeld 20 Oct 1715.  Hard to prove, but Abigail did name one of her children David, also there is a David Todhunter buried at Longsleddale in 1807 - possibly Abigail's brother (baptised at Threlkeld 22 Apr 1728).

Paul.

Hi Adam, thank you for those, that's very kind of you.

The Mankin's are cousins so great to have that.

I hadn't come across thos Chamberlains before and I can't find them in the censuses either, but they may well be relatives so I'll dig around a bit more.

Was there another Chamberlain headstone? I just wondered as it was Chamberlain (Robson) in your list which caught my attention as I have links to both Chamberlain's and Robson's in Auckland but didn't know of a marriage between them.

Thanks again, Paul.

Thanks for the info on Swan Street, I hadn't been able to locate it. My grandmother lived at Leman Street and later Glasshouse Street (now called John Fisher Street) in Whitechapel so that fits nicely.

Wiggy, my feeling is that it's likely to be quite a major event as they have made quite an effort with their costumes and have obviously thought it important  enough to get a school photo of the occasion. My grandmother would have been 5 years old in 1902 so either the Coronation or Empire Day sound like good possibilities. Your suggestion on the backdrop makes sense. I imagine there would have been a lot more groups of children in other outfits and so maybe there were lots of banners for different parts of the empire?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Re: Photo Restoration & Dating Please

Hi, thanks for all you replies.

Jim, 1870's would fit very well with what I was hoping as the man I believe it is was in his 70's then.  I had wondered whether it might be his son (who had the same name) rather than him but the son wasn't born until 1831, so judging by the age of the man in the photo if it's from the 1870's I think it must be the father.

Thanks your restoration Bill. You've done a great job, especially with so little detail in the face to work with. It's much appreciated.

Thanks for your suggestions on the label Tony. Do you think this was a label placed on the photo by the photographer at the time or something that might have been added much later by a relative?   I was a bit surprised the label was on the front. I think the first line may say Huck as that was the man's surname.  I didn't have a clue about the rest though but was hoping there may be a date in there somewhere.  A filing code makes a lot of sense though as it does seem to have several numbers or letters or whatever.

Thanks again to you all, Paul.

Hi, thank you so much for that lovely restoration Carolyn, you've done a great job and I'm delighted with it. It brings out much more detail.

Thanks everyone else for your replies as well.  Yes I think you are all right about it being the parts of the Union Jack. I saw the english and irish flags but the rest seemed to be a bit of a mish mash in the original to me but those scottish and welsh hats must settle it.  I guess the blue in the scottish flag and the Union Jack just doesn't show up in the photo for some reason, perahps it was lightly drawn on the flags. I was also a bit thrown by the backdrop which I thought was a palm tree and a fan, but perhaps it was just something from another occasion that they reused.

Thanks to all of you, Paul.

Hi, please could someone help me by restoring this photo. It shows a school group from "Swan Street LCC school" and was taken in 1903 according to a note on the back but this looks to have been added later so may not be 100% reliable. The girl arrowed (not by me!) is my grandmother so I'm particularly interested in that part of the photo. Also any ideas what the outfits are about or what the occasion is?  The school would have been in London - probably Islington or Whitechapel. Thanks for any help, Paul.
