Devon Lookup Requests / Re: help with Thomas HOSKING
« on: Sunday 22 April 12 10:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi,  I have only just spotted your enquiry about Thomas Charles Irvine Hosking.  I don't know how far you have got with him as its several years since you made your first post.  He was actually known as 'Irvine' and he was my great uncle.  On one census he is shown as 'Irving'.  He was born in Newlyn, Penzance, Cornwall more or less on the harbour.  The family lived there for several years before moving to Ogmore Vale, Nr Bridgend, South Wales.    I have a photoghraph of Irvine if you would like to have a copy.  He was and is still a bit of a mystery.  Apparently, he ran away from home when he was a school boy and then returned home some time later.  He appeared to have the wandering lust.  I met him a few times when I was young.  The last time was about 1966 and he turned to visit my grandmother (his sister).  He was wearing a camel coloured coat with a stetson type hat and carried a walking stick with a blade inside!  A bit unusual in our locality to say the least.  He never said where he was living or any details about his life.  He was never seen or heard from again.  As you say he married Violet and they had one daughter Noreen.  I have details of Noreen and her family etc.   I know that in the 40's he appears to have a taxi business in Reading.   If there is any information you might like to know about his family then I can help you out.

Regards

The Golden Mile is part of the A48 road leading from Bridgend to Cardiff.

There were actully two cinemas in Aberkenfig.  The main one was called The Lyric  which was a brick built building which is still there but there was a very old corrugated type building which was also a cinema which was located on the hill out of Aberkenfig leading to Bridgend.  This was pulled down many years ago.

Hi Steve

This is my very first post on RootsChat.  I've joined because I've been reading your posts regarding Stanton Drew Graveyard and in particular your reference to Phoebe Isabella Rogers.  I was over the moon to be able to pick up the pictures that were sent to you by Janet showing the gravestones and was then able to pick up yet more information for my family tree from them.  My great grandmother was Phoebe Ann Gait (Rogers) and her daughter Hannah Selina Rogers (Delbridge) was my great grandmother.    If there is any information that I can give you then please do not hesitate to ask.  I have a photograph of Hannah Selina should you require a copy.

Regards
