Armed Forces / Battle of waterloo medal.
« on: Tuesday 02 December 14 07:04 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help please. I have a battle of waterloo medal that is named  with the mans Christian name and surname, but have seen others where ranks have been included on the medals rim.

What is the norm ?

should the mans rank be on the medal or just his name ???

I am trying to find out information (absolutely anything) about a DFM I have.

The recipient was 551833 F/Sgt G O P Bowen.

He was in bomber Command and operated on Wellingtons and Lancs. That is all I know about him !

Any help whatsoever is greatly appreciated.

Armed Forces / 4th foot involvement at Battle of Waterloo
« on: Saturday 28 May 11 04:34 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me place what role the 4th Foot Regiment, which was part of the 6th Division played at the Battle of Waterloo. I have looked at several maps but could not see their position in the Allies lines. The force replenishing and supporting Hougoumont is quite well documented so I do not think that the 4th were part of this force.

They may have been part of the centre force as this was a mass of British infantry, but I am not sure.

Any help would be most gratefully received.

Armed Forces / 23rd Royal Welsh Fusiliers, Ashanti War 1873-74
« on: Wednesday 04 May 11 14:40 BST (UK)  »
Looking for any information that can help fill gaps with any information concerning operations in the Ashanti War 1873-74 involving 2nd Battalion, 23rd Royal Welsh Fusiliers. I found a web site that had all the despatches that were sent back to the War Office and this was good, although this details a lot of the actions of the Naval Brigade and the 42rd Highlanders.

I am sure that the 23rd must have been in some heavy action as the war was close fought in dense bush against large numbers of Ashanti tribsmen, but very little seems written about the 23rd.

If anyone has any service/medal information, I am particularly looking for  2318 Pte David Yeomans, 2nd 23 RWF.

Thank you in advance

Armed Forces / Re: 16th Lancers help needed

Hi Trevor.

The medal I am looking at is a Gwalior Star that is currently up on E bay. I am totally convinced that the medal is genuine but whether the receipient named on the medal was present is another matter.

My gut feeling is that he was. The naming is not as was officially issued and is very neat engraving. I have looked at many examples of original naming and both the style and amount of detail engraved was limited. I think that this guy being a sergeant major wanted more detail addded and hence had it done himself which is very believable as generally all these medals were "doctored" to have a suspension ring added, so think that he would have had the engraving and ring added at the same time ?

Take a look at E bay , collectables, medals, 1815-1899

Thanks Trevor. You read in the papers about all these fake guys marching with a chest full of medals on remembrance day with medals they never earned. I wonder if the same was the case back in 1843. I hope not, as I have found a nice medal named to him that I would like to buy !

Armed Forces / Research help needed ! 9th foot (Norfolk Regiment) Jowaki, India
« on: Tuesday 19 April 11 04:03 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone assist me with finding out some history regarding the "Jowaki" campaign in India 1877-8. I know that there were two expeditions into this territory by a British force of 7400, but know very little else. internet searches seem to draw very little information.

Particularly interested in involvement by the 9th Foot (Norfolk Regiment)

Thanks in advance.
