I just talked to a friend who is from that area and she said Sonja Roe Jewellers is located in that building now.  You can use google maps to see a current day photo.

Hi Karen,
Thank you for checking this! Do you know of a group that keeps track of land records in Chatham, Ontario? I would just like to be able to file something like that.
Best,
J Wall

Hi Lisa and Karen,
Thank you very much for your replies.

Lisa, thank you for posting the link to the Gazetteer! Yesterday, I was in Chatham (for a short day trip) and was able to look at an original printing. I will try to look through the photos soon.

Karen, I'll be sure to try the Library resources since I live a considerable distance away from Chatham.

Would either one of you know if there are scanned versions of the Chatham Daily Planet? I was able to get some dates from the card catalog yesterday, but did not have time to look them up on the microfilm (my travel partner had to get back for a meeting today).
Thanks,
J Wall

Canada / Shop/Store Location in Chatham-Kent, ON?
« on: Tuesday 12 August 14 20:31 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I am trying to locate a shop that my ancestor, John Wall, would have operated in Chatham-Kent, ON between 1871 and 1891. Information that I have been able to find through Canadian Census documents show that he was a merchant of dry goods in Chatham-Kent or the surrounding area (Tilbury).  I have a photo of the inside of the shop, but no address is on the back. It is likely that at least a couple of his sons, John and William Edgar Wall, worked with/for him and the shop. Does anyone have a recommendation as to where I could look to find the address of the shop?
Thank you,
J Wall

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: John Wall - Indenture Document
« on: Sunday 23 June 13 04:24 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone,
Thank you very much for your responses and sorry for the delay in saying thank you (I've been busy with school work)!

This has been really interesting. Now I have what appears to be a Bristol official, Henry Britton, to tie to the document. When I initially talked to genealogy researchers in Bristol they told me that indenture of apprenticeship was falling into disuse by this time and therefore mentioned that official recording would be unlikely. I am guessing having Henry's name on the document means that it was official recorded somewhere.

Thank you all, again.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / John Wall - Indenture Document
« on: Sunday 16 June 13 00:37 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,
I have an indenture document (please see attached), which might contain a very useful block of information (area in red in image). However, I am having a hard time deciphering all of it. The last two lines seem to read:

Emma Wall in the presence of
James Hobbs Soap Boiler

Could anyone help me with the lines above that within the red box?
Thank you,
J Wall

There is something about a "but" that seems to negate all previous thanks..... if you  follow the 1901 census link given you by valerie the image might have an approximate date of entry to Canada....
also note that valerie gave you a whole list of places to search within that link, such as passenger lists to Canada

Sorry, what I meant by thank was to thank her for posting the information. However, I had some of the information. I have been looking over information in the links.

I have not been able to find any information regarding his immigration and marriage. Can someone please help me?
Thank you,
John

The marriage information was on already on that first link above 4 December 1910 by Karenlee.

I missed that in the archives I created in my email with links to the the forum postings. It has been awhile since I was last able to work on my family genealogy due to graduate school and moving several times. Last time I was on here I did not have access to a pay-for-use ancestry website. Recently, I was able to get a membership and start organizing all of my files. I am, however, certain that I do not have any of the e/immigration information for the John WALLs in my family.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Digitizing photos
« on: Monday 27 August 12 04:01 BST (UK)  »
I am thinking of digitizing some of my family photos from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Some of them are in excellent condition while others are stuck to their glass plates or seem to be fading badly. Ideally, I would like to be able to have digital images of the photos which would allow me to identify the people in the images and sent to other family members.

My father believes that we should be able to use our flatbed scanner to scan the photos which appear to be fine, but I am afraid this might speed up bleaching the photos. What do you all suggest?

For the photos which are fading, bent, etc. I am thinking of turning on several photo-shoot quality lamps and snapping several photos of each hoping that at least one will be "good enough."

As a note, personally I am not not inclined to remove them the ones that are stuck to their glass from behind the glass. I guess that's a bit of a fear of mine.

Thanks for any hits, tips and suggestions.
-John

Hi Valeriec,
Thank you for your reply, but I am mainly looking for records that date between 1851 and 1871. Outside of that, I have information regarding his birth and now marriage and death. Additionally, I have found him listed in the 1841 and 1851 England Censuses along with the 1881 and 1891 Canada Censuses.

Lilybell,
Thank you! That seems like a likely match for my ancestor.
