Banffshire / Re: Birkenburn Farm , Keith
« on: Thursday 06 February 20 02:13 GMT (UK)  »
I recently came across a reference to Birkenburn Farm in a Last Will and Testament document for William Stuart dated 1799.
William Stuart died 23 June 1800 at Fort St George, Madras, India.
In the 3 page document, he is described as an Assistant Surgeon and referred to as Dr William Stuart,  who is in the service of the Honourable East India Company. He requests his executors to sell his belongings and property, pay his servants wages, pay his debts, and then remit the rest of the money to his father John Stuart Esquire of Birkenburn, near Keith, North Britain.

I found this document on the Find My Past website:
British India Office Wills & Probate, William Stuart, Madras, 1799

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Re: Robert Monk b.1780 - St Giles

Thank you for the offer but unfortunately Robert's parents are not mentioned in his army records.

There is a genealogy research centre near me but the lady is undergoing chemotherapy and has not been available for the last year. I have been awaiting results from her helper since September of last year.
Additionally, i hired an English researcher online through a website last year, who then proceeded to charge my credit card (unauthorized) for a further $300 over a period of 3 months with no work done. Luckily, my bank refunded the money in full.

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Robert Monk b.1780 - St Giles
« on: Thursday 10 March 11 22:11 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for Robert Monk, whose British Army records state that he was born in St Giles in the parish of St Giles, Oxford in 1780.
He was a breeches maker.
I have not been able to find any birth or marriage records online (yet!).
He joined the Army in 1805, 30th Regiment of Foot and was posted to India in 1806, where he remained until his death in 1853.
He married Mary and had 9 children in India.
That's all I know.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am in Australia, so it's a bit difficult for me to visit anyone to view records other than online.

Occupation Interests / Re: "Breeches Maker" in 1790-1797 Cambridge Directory

Hello, i'm about 2 years late joining this very interesting conversation  ;) but i just thought i'd chime in to say that my ancestor Robert Monk b.1780 from St Giles, Oxford was a breeches maker too. He is listed on his 1827 army discharge papers as having that profession, after being in the army in India for 21 years. Whether he was a breeches maker for the whole 20 years, i don't know ... but there you go  :)
His papers state that his reason for requesting to leave the army at age 47 was that he was "worn out!"  ;)
