World War One / 1918 injured soldier 2nd Scottish General Hospital, Craigleith, Scotland
« on: Wednesday 19 February 14 00:47 GMT (UK)  »
My uncle was removed from the battlefront for medical reasons during 1st world war.  He ended up
in 2nd Scottish General Hospital, Craigleith, Scotland, which was a military hospital. On 7th Mar. 1918 he was declared not fit for discharge. On 24th April, 1918 he was discharged from the army due to heart disease.  I don't know if he was also discharged from the hospital at that time or if he died there.   The 2nd Scottish Hospital is , of course, no longer a military hospital and is now known under another name. Is there likely to be any hospital records of that time still around? I can find no trace of him returning home to England or of his death.

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Re: Newcastle St. John's

Thank you Michael.  I have gone this route and came to a dead end.  Minorca, I believe, was just a street in Sunderland, not an area. Whatever,
I have now decided to relegate MJM to my 'brick wall' file.
Thanks to WolfieSmith and Janis for the information re Mark Joseph's death.  I think this must be him as, in all my research, I have not found another Mark Joseph Makepeace around this time in Nlorthumberland/Durham.  His parents will remain a mystery.

Thank you all for your replies.  I do have records of the transcripts for all Mark Joseph Makepeace's children which gives their birth dates as well as their christening dates but not where they were born. Although some census' have them as being b. in North Shields (where they were christened), some have Newcastle.  I also have records of his wife's christening which was at All Saints Newcastle and, as MJM is listed as 'native of St. John's Newcastle' in one of his children's christening records, I tend to assume all the family were b. in Newcastle. (ignoring the Minorca reference, as I think it would be a waste of time pursuing that route, even though there is a possibility he was born there).  This one, I think, will be delegated to my 'brick wall' file.

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Newcastle St. John's

Are there birth records, as distinct from christening records?
If anyone has access to the birth records of Newcastle St. Johns, I would appreciate a look-up for the birth of Mark Joseph MAKEPEACE, born in or about 1773.
Although he was married at Christ Church, North Shields and all his children were christened there, I have some evidence that he may have been born in St. John's parish and his children were possibly b. in Newcastle.  His wife was from All Saints, Newcastle.
I think I have exhausted all avenues available to me and I need his place of birth to help me trace who his parents were.

The Common Room / Re: What Country is your research ?
« on: Sunday 20 February 11 20:39 GMT (UK)  »
The ancestors of my husband and I came from Staffordshire, Cheshire, Cumbria, Yorkshire, Northumberland, Durham and Wales but, strangely, almost all branches appeared to have ended up in Liverpool, Lancashire.
The last generation appear to be the first to travel further afield, with many going to Australia producing many cousins I have never met. My husband and I brought our two children to Canada, starting a Canadian family, so future researchers will have a more complicated time than I am having.

World War One / Re: finding a regiment
« on: Monday 07 February 11 21:08 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you all so much.  I was dumb.  Obviously his time was before WW1.
I have the names and dates of birth of the children b. in India, from 1881 census but didn't know how to go about getting their birth certificates.
I had looked through 'Find My Past' a few years ago and got nowhere.  I suspect their records weren't as extensive as they are now.  My subscription has since expired so I will have to renew it. I have been relying on Ancestry but have drawn a blank.
Many thanks again for your help and pointing out how dumb I was - I can't believe I missed that.

World War One / finding a regiment
« on: Monday 07 February 11 17:49 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandfather, John Grimster (b. 1839 in Somerset) was in the army and in 1871 was stationed at Verne Citadel Barracks, Portland, Dorset.
He was posted to India and had 3 children who were born there. He was back in
England by 1880.
His Medal Rolls Index Card shows:-
Royal Field Artillery  (Regtl. No. 87049)
and Royal Engineers, Cpl.  (Regtl. No. 37037)
Under 'Victory', I can't quite decipher, but looks like
'Roll'  RE/101 'Page' 3073

How can I find his Regiment, as I would like to know where in India and when he was posted as I am trying to trace his marriage and his children's births. I don't know his wife's maiden name although she was b. in Ireland.  I have the dates of birth of their children in India but no other information.

Family History Beginners Board / Parish records

Does anyone know what kind of information would likely be in Parish records from about 1780's - name of parents, etc. on birth records, or birth date on marriage records, etc.
