Dublin / Re: Grafton Street Shooting - 24 June 1921

Hi there,

I recently received a copy of my grandfathers papers.  His name was William Roe and died in 1976. He was in Na Fianna in Boland's Mill in 1916. And was heavily involved in operations in the south inner city in the War of Independence and the Civil War. I have not found anything in his papers on this operation. The was once a jewish jeweller shot on Grafton St.  He was shot by undercover army men (freestate) in the 20s and was mistaken for my grandfather.

Has William Roe's name cropped up in any of your other research on south inner city activity?

Gary,

My grandfather was also in Bolands Mill. Does the photo of J. Whelan with his old comrades list their names.

Dumfriesshire / Murrays in Tundergarth

I am trying to find out which part of Scotland my gggrandfather  came from. He left Scotland and ended up in Dublin in the 1800s. I believe that i may have found his death date, which gives his birth as 1844 and also his father's name Thomas. The only fit seems to be a George Murray living in Tundergarth with his family in the 1851 census. His fahter's name is Thomas on the Scottish census. Is the name Murray common in the Tundergarth area? Are there still Murray's around the area? Is there another search i could do to make sure that this is my gggrandfather's place.

I have recently received a copy of my grandfather's papers which include a list of the members of A company, 3rd Battalion. This was made for his application for pension in the 30s and looks like it was working document at the time with lots of marks and names crossed out on the list. It also gives the current address of each person at the time.

He was in the Fianna in Boland's Mill with Dev. All his papers relate to his activities during the civil war. Would love to know more about his involvement in the war of independence. His name was William Roe.

Elwyn,

Does the info say where he was buried, born or what he died of. I'll go on both of those to check Scottish census with the knowledge that his father was Thomas. Thanks again to you both.

CP , familiar with your directions as i'm from the area as is my mother and father. Its possible that my grandfather was in the gun running as he was  Fianna Boy scout at the time.

My father remembers cottages on philipsburgh ave. where the 'top shops' are today, up from the once 'Dolan's Farm. One of these cottages was a shop in the 40s.
