I have just tried to report a thread (to move it to another forum) but the report function is not working.

Have you got any dates?  And which family members came from which locality?
I expect you know that the first surname is the father's and the second surname is the mother's.

If they died in Scotland, I think their death certificates would include their mothers' maiden names.

The Lighter Side / Re: Here's a word we should all start using

I got A levels in French and Latin and always found Latin very useful, as Forfarian says, in matters of genealogy and also as a background for my later learning of Spanish and Catalan.
There were only three of us in the A level Latin class and fond memories, our teacher was a young man who had a very modern outlook on this 'dead' language, really made it come to life, and what's more was mad about cricket so that as soon as the cricket season started we had our lessons outside with the radio commentary in the background!
My (girls' grammar) school was quite a pioneer back in the '70s offering O level Russian which I also took. I can still read the alphabet but sadly only remember a few words now.

This looks like a possible marriage for MARGARET ANDERSON to

JOHN PRINGLE 27/01/1792 Haddington on SP.

Does the record note her father?

Colin

Thanks again, Colin.

No father's names on marriage records from those years.  The two witnesses to Margaret's marriage are not related to her.
There's no additional info on any other records.
Unfortunately the Haddington Kirk Session records for the 1770's appear to be lost  :(  There is a big gap between 1729 and 1781.
I think this branch of my tree is going to have to return to its place on the back burner.

Many thanks for your interest.

Thank you Col for replying.

Here's what I have for the Anderson baptisms.

John  (my ancestor) bapt. 22/3/1772 son of John and Agnis (Foster), witnesses Richard and James Anderson
Margaret  bapt. 47/7/1773 (MMN Forrester), witnesses James and Richard Anderson
James bapt. 20/8/1775 (MMN Foster), witnesses Richard and James Anderson
Alexander bapt. 16/5/1777 (MMN Foster), witnesses Richard and James Anderson
Robert bapt. 22/8/1779 (MMN Foster), witnesses Richard and James Anderson

And now here's a real fly in the works.
I also have an earlier baptism.
Richard Anderson bapt. 7/1/1770, parents Richard Anderson and Agnis Forrester  ??? ???
I  can find no record for a Richard which could fit, either.  This Richard would likely be a brother or the father of John. The more I look at this, the more confused I get!

Thank you.
Of course, some records just haven't survived to be found.
I have to assume that the family Davidson-Forrest in Garvald is just a coincidence.
