There is a Thomas Kennedy in Knock on the 1901 census

Residents of a house 25 in Meeltran (Knock North, Mayo)

Cannon   Julia   45   Female   Head of Family   Roman Catholice  Dressmaker

Kennedy   Thomas   19   Male    Nephew   Roman Catholice Farm Labourer

Thomas senior is a widower.

May be a red herring, of course.

Have you seen the Wiki entry?

John Middleton, 1st Earl of Middleton

Born around 1608, John was the eldest son of Robert Middleton of Caldhame and his wife Catherine Strachan; his younger brother Alexander and nephew George both served as Principal of King's College, Aberdeen; great uncle of George's son John Middleton; and great-great uncle of Charles Middleton, 1st Baron Barham

The Common Room / Re: Why do some people...?

My g-g-grandfather John and his brother Thomas both invented middle names when they arrived in Australia in the late 1840/early 1850's. Thomas's was James, a recurring name in the family, but John chose Andrew, and there is no Andrew anywhere in the family past or present.
I wondered if having a middle name simply sounded more 'posh' or upmarket.

Hello and welcome.
Have you got her on the 1841 census?

Thank you.

I've at last found my grandfather on the 1921 census aged 12.
Family lore has it that he was sent to boarding school on the Isle of Man.  The truth appears to be that he was in an orphanage.  I don't know who sent him there, but the record shows his mother to be dead, whereas she had actually gone off on the 'fishing fleet' to India to find a new husband (she was widowed when granddad was a baby).   :o
