Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Devitt family - census look up please
« on: Sunday 21 April 13 06:31 BST (UK)  »
I'm also looking for Margaret Devitt b 1855/6 daughter of Edward Patrick Devitt and Ann Unknown  and listed as living in Elswick, Newcastle Upon Tyne in the 1871 census.  Parents Edward and Ann are listed as born Ireland, but Margaret and her younger brother John are listed as born Manchester.  My intuition is that Margaret married Henry Pearce--however intuition doesn't apply under the circumstances!  Given Edward and Ann's ages it seemed likely there would be older children.  I recently purchased the entry of birth for an 1854 birth of Edward Devitt in the sub-district of Chorlton upon Medlock, County of Lancaster.  The Edward on this certificate was born on 21st December 1853 at 2 Ivy Street to Patrick Devitt, labourer, and Ann Devitt formerly Rourke with the 'Signature, description and residence of the informant' "x the mark of Ann Devitt, mother, 2 Ivy Street, Chorlton upon Medlock".  So it seems the Margaret on Sylvie's registration had an older brother Edward Devitt.  I'm still searching for a Margaret born to Edward Patrick rather than Patrick...I'm trying to work out how traditional family naming patterns might apply, however just get more confused!

Kent / Re: Maidstone Barracks 1841

Thank you for responding so quickly, Rog and Trev.  I've taken your suggestions on board and will factor them in to the continuing search for our Edward.   The first record we have of him that we are sure of is Edward Patrick Deveitt (misspelt) wife Ann in the 1871 census, son John Edward (my great grandfather) and daughter Margaret--they lived in Elswick, Newcastle upon Tyne Northumberland.  John Edward and his mother Ann migrated to South Australia in the late 1870's--we are not sure what happened to both Edward and Margaret!  Thanks again,  Bev

Hello,  How did you go in finding out answers to your questions on your visit to Kent? I probably need to make a similar visit (I live in Australia, so not sure when), to see if I can find the details of Edward Devitt, born in Ireland, who was aged 14 and listed as a private in the Maidstone Barracks on the day of the census in 1841and as coming from Ireland.  There's a chance he's my great, great grandfather who we know very litte about.  It's interesting that all of the 14 year olds (one or two on each page) had a x next to their entry. I wonder what that means?
